Why we like it

Oldtree stands out in the Blender library for turning tree creation into a two-or-three-click process, with each press generating a completely new tree. The generated materials and particles are intentionally basic starting points meant to be refined.

What is Oldtree?

Oldtree is a Blender add-on for generating a sculptured tree complete with moss, ivy, leaves, branches and roots. The interface is simplified to make tree creation faster. Basic parameters include Deform Tree, which deforms the branches and trunk (higher values increase the deformation, lower values make the tree straighter), Size Tree, which scales the tree height, Create root for roots, and Create armature for animation use. Pressing Create Tree builds the basic tree and sets up vertex groups, a UV map and vertex colors along the way.

Once a tree is selected, advanced parameters become available: Create Moss with Moss Number for moss density, Ivy Size and Ivy Density, and Create Leaf with Leaf Number for leaf density. The created materials and particles are basic and can be changed or improved — the moss particle can be swapped for snow, for example. Leaves are meant to be made separately as different objects, and each click produces a completely new tree.

The add-on was tested on Windows with Blender 2.79, while 2.8 was being tested. On an Intel i5 processor, tree creation takes roughly 30 seconds at the highest parameter values.

Who is Oldtree best for?

Oldtree is best for blender artists building nature scenes who need varied trees generated quickly.

How much does Oldtree cost?

Oldtree is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Generates a complete tree with trunk, branches, roots, moss, ivy and leaves in two or three clicks
  • Deform Tree parameter deforms the branches and trunk, with higher values increasing the effect and lower values straightening the tree
  • Size Tree scales the tree height, and Create root adds roots
  • Create Tree sets up vertex groups, a UV map (seam edge) and vertex colors for bark roughness and moss color
  • Advanced controls for Moss Number, Ivy Size, Ivy Density and Leaf Number to adjust density and length
  • Basic materials and particles can be changed or improved — the moss particle can be swapped for a snow particle, for example
  • Create armature option for animation use, intended for future versions

Frequently asked questions

Which Blender versions does Oldtree support?

Oldtree was tested on Windows with Blender 2.79, and version 2.8 was noted as being tested. It is listed here for Blender 2.79, 2.8 and 2.81. Because testing on the later versions was still in progress at the time of the 1.1 release in October 2018, compatibility with those builds was not fully confirmed. If you run a newer release, check the developer's page for the current compatibility status before installing rather than assuming support beyond the versions listed.

How long does Oldtree take to generate a tree?

Oldtree creates a tree in roughly 30 seconds on an Intel i5 processor when the highest parameter values are used. That timing comes from the developer's own testing. Each press of the Create Tree button produces a completely new tree, so the generation runs every time you want a fresh result rather than once. If you need many different trees for diversity in a scene, that per-tree time is worth keeping in mind as you plan your workflow.

Can I change the moss and leaves that Oldtree creates?

Oldtree creates materials and particles that are only basic and can be changed or improved as you wish. The moss particle, for instance, can be swapped for a snow particle. Leaves are meant to be made separately as different objects rather than generated as part of the base tree. So the add-on gives you a starting point — the trunk, roots, moss and ivy along with the vertex groups, UV map and vertex colors behind them — that you then refine with your own materials and settings.

What did version 1.1 of Oldtree change?

Oldtree version 1.1, dated October 16 2018, included an algorithm correction and disabled autosnap on the root. It added a Root snap option, an option to create a stump using Size Tree values of 1 to 2, and a work-in-progress option to create animation. The update also changed the texture and closed the ends of the branches. Those are the changes recorded for that release, and the animation option in particular was still a work in progress at that point.

Is Oldtree free?

Oldtree is listed as free here. Licensing terms can change over time, so check the developer's page for the current details before you rely on that. The add-on is made by Isrdjan and is available through the developer's own listing, where you can also find the documentation and any updates. For the most accurate and up-to-date licensing information, the developer's page is the place to confirm what applies to your use.
