Why we like it

PBR Painter 3 has been in development since its January 2021 release and holds a 5-star rating across 52 reviews on superhive, where it sits at rank 119.

What is Pbr Painter 3?

PBR Painter 3 is a layer-based, multichannel texturing addon for Blender. Its approach lets you modify all channels of a PBR material at once, including albedo, roughness, displacement, normals and emission. Materials can be built from scratch, assembled from imported pre-made PBR texture maps, or created by generating procedural textures separately for each channel.

Behind the scenes, PBR Painter automatically generates and manages the node setups that give you control over every aspect of each channel. You can combine normals of stacked layers, adjust the opacity of any channel on any layer, and build complex layered mask systems, all without manually creating a single node. Everything happens inside the addon's own independent workspace.

The addon works on Windows, macOS and Linux, and the latest version is compatible with Blender 5. On macOS, note that Blender applies a stricter limit on the number of image texture nodes rendered with Eevee, which can be restricting when working with imported textures. PBR Painter was first released in January 2021.

Who is Pbr Painter 3 best for?

Pbr Painter 3 is best for creating and editing PBR materials in Blender through a layered, multichannel texturing workflow.

How much does Pbr Painter 3 cost?

Pbr Painter 3 is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Which Blender versions does PBR Painter 3 support?

PBR Painter 3 is compatible with Blender 5, and its latest release covers a range of Blender versions through separate install files. For Blender 4.2 and later, install the addon using the pbrpainter-3.4.6.zip file. For earlier versions of Blender, use the __legacy__pbrpainter-3.4.6.zip file instead, otherwise it will not install. If you're unsure which build matches your setup, the developer's page and the PBR Painter Discord community can help you confirm the right file for your version.

Does PBR Painter 3 work on Windows, macOS and Linux?

PBR Painter 3 works with Windows, macOS and Linux. On macOS, however, Blender applies a stricter limit on the number of image texture nodes that can be rendered with Eevee, which could be restricting when you're working with imported textures. If you plan to work heavily with imported PBR texture maps on a Mac, it's worth keeping that Eevee node limit in mind. On Windows and Linux, Blender doesn't apply that same stricter limit.

Do I need to build node setups manually in PBR Painter 3?

PBR Painter 3 automatically generates and manages the node setups behind your materials, so you never have to create a single node by hand. This gives you control over every channel of every layer: you can combine normals of stacked layers, adjust the opacity of any channel on any layer, and build complex layered mask systems. Materials can be created from scratch, assembled from imported PBR texture maps, or generated procedurally for each channel, all from within the addon's own independent workspace.

Is PBR Painter 3 free to use?

PBR Painter 3 is listed as free here in the catalog. Licensing terms can change over time, so for the most current details on pricing and usage rights, check the developer's page directly. ByteBrush Studio maintains the addon along with a YouTube channel and a Discord community where you can ask questions and learn more about what's included. That's the best place to confirm the current terms before you download and install it for your Blender projects.
