Why we like it

Rate It earns its place for turning object review into a structured pass: rate, comment, snapshot, then publish an HTML file to share.

What is Rate It?

Rate It is a script for 3ds Max built around reviewing the objects in a scene. Once you select the objects you want to look at, it lets you evaluate them by validating or rejecting each one, assign a rating, and add notes through a built-in comment box. The interface is kept light.

Version 1.1 adds an annotation mode, where you click on an object to add an annotation, and a snapshot mode that captures multiple snapshots of an object, including its annotations. When the review is done, Rate It publishes the results as an HTML review file, which makes it straightforward to share ratings and comments with teammates working on the same scene.

Installation runs through the RateIt.mzp file, after which the tool appears under the GroutchoCG category in the Customize User Interface dialog, ready to add to a toolbar or a keyboard shortcut. It is listed here as free, and is compatible with 3ds Max 9.

Frequently asked questions

Does Rate It work with 3ds Max 9?

Rate It lists compatibility with 3ds Max 9. The script installs by running the RateIt.mzp file, and once installed it appears under the GroutchoCG category in the Customize User Interface dialog, where you can attach it to a toolbar or a keyboard shortcut. If you are on a newer release of 3ds Max, check the developer's page for the most current compatibility details before relying on it in production.

How do I install Rate It in 3ds Max?

Rate It installs by running the RateIt.mzp file. After that, open the Customize menu, choose Customize User Interface, and look under the GroutchoCG category, where the tool can be added to a toolbar or assigned to a keyboard shortcut. From there the typical flow is to open a scene, select the objects you want to review, run Rate It, and publish the review file once you have finished evaluating and rating them.

What did version 1.1 of Rate It add?

Rate It version 1.1 introduces two additions. The first is an annotation mode, which lets you click on an object and add an annotation to it. The second is a snapshot mode, which creates multiple snapshots of an object and includes its annotations. These sit alongside the existing review features, including the comment box for adding comments to objects and the option to publish the finished review as an HTML file for sharing ratings and comments with teammates.

Is Rate It free to use?

Rate It is listed here as free. It is distributed as a small mzp package that installs into 3ds Max through the Customize User Interface dialog under the GroutchoCG category. Licensing terms can change over time, so check the developer's page for the most current details before you build it into a shared team pipeline. The developer also invites suggestions and comments, so the same page is a good place to reach out with feedback.
