Why we like it

Renamer earns its place in the Adobe Exchange library as a free extension that pairs batch renaming with a route to the Media Encoder queue. Version 1.1.5, last updated in December 2020, fixed an issue with icons not displaying.

What is Renamer?

Renamer runs as an After Effects extension, opened from the Window menu under Extensions. Its operations apply to the items selected in the project panel, and if nothing is selected they apply to all items instead.

Renaming works in two modes you switch between from the Rename menu. Find and Replace searches for a value and swaps it for another, and it is case sensitive. Custom function rename reveals an Edit button that opens a renaming function following the naming convention used at Bending Spoons; the function is editable, and a default example naming convention script is included to build from.

For output, the Render button lets you set a folder for the comps you want to render, then adds them to the Adobe Media Encoder queue using that path. The output path supports a few tokens: [root] is replaced with the path to the current Adobe project and errors if the project is unsaved, [YYMMDD] inserts the current date, and .. moves up one folder in the hierarchy.

Who is Renamer best for?

Renamer is best for after Effects users who need to rename multiple project-panel items and send comps to Adobe Media Encoder with a specified output path.

How much does Renamer cost?

Renamer is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Renamer work with After Effects 17.0?

Renamer lists compatibility with After Effects 17.0 and later. You open it from the Window menu under Extensions, and once it's open its actions run against whatever is selected in the project panel, or against all items if nothing is selected. That covers both the renaming modes and the render step. For the current version and any compatibility updates, check Bending Spoons' developer page before installing.

Is Renamer free to use?

Renamer is listed here as free, and the developer describes it as a free tool. It includes both renaming modes, Find and Replace plus a custom function rename that follows an editable Bending Spoons naming convention, along with the render step that adds comps to the Adobe Media Encoder queue. Licensing terms can change over time, so check Bending Spoons' developer page for the current details before relying on it for a project.

How do I switch between Find and Replace and custom renaming in Renamer?

Renamer offers two renaming modes you toggle from the Rename menu, opened by clicking the arrow in the Rename button. Find and Replace searches for the value in the first field and swaps it for the value in the second, and it is case sensitive. Toggling the switch reveals an Edit button for custom function rename, which opens an editable naming-convention function with a default example script you can start from.

What do the output-path tokens in Renamer do?

Renamer's Render button sets the output folder for the comps you want to render, then adds those comps to the Adobe Media Encoder queue. In the path field you can use a few tokens: [root] is replaced with the path to the current Adobe project and returns an error if the project is unsaved, [YYMMDD] inserts the current date, and .. moves up one folder in the hierarchy.
