Earns a spot in the scriptspot library for the range of asset types it handles and its combined tracking, relinking, and archiving workflow.
FilePathFinder gives 3ds Max users control over the external links in their scenes. It tracks assets, searches for missing files, and relinks external files, with support for XREF files and almost all known renderers and plug-ins. You can collect external files, archive a 3ds Max scene, rename links by mask, remove links from a scene, and exclude files from collecting by file type. Assets can also be collected via clipboard or drag-and-drop.
The Pro version adds the Batch Render&Relink tool, which organizes asset files for 3D model and material libraries in batch mode and renders thumbnails for 3ds Max scenes, material libraries, and IES files. FilePathFinder displays thumbnails for bitmaps, 3D models, proxies, IES files, and material libraries, including HDR, EXR, and PSD formats. In Interactive Mode it lists files linked to selected objects, places materials and bitmap textures into the Material Editor, and shows or hides bitmaps in the viewport.
Version 4.17.01 adds support for 3ds Max 2026, plus playback of IFL sequences and animated GIFs in the list view and the external Asset Viewer. The plugin is compatible with 3ds Max 2016 and above. A demo video is available.
FilePathFinder Pro & Light versions is best for 3ds Max artists managing external scene assets through tracking, relinking, collecting, and archiving.
FilePathFinder Pro & Light versions is completely free to download and use.
FilePathFinder is compatible with 3ds Max 2016 and above and works across that range for asset tracking, relinking, collecting, and archiving tasks. Version 4.17.01 adds support for 3ds Max 2026, while support for 3ds Max 2014 and 2015 has been dropped. If you run an older release, note the change before updating. For the full list of supported releases and any version-specific notes, check the developer's page.
FilePathFinder ships in a demo version and a full version. The demo version cannot be activated, and its download archive includes the word "Demo" in the file name; during installation or launch, "Demo" appears next to the logo. If the logo has no "Demo" label but a "Demo" label appears over files, that indicates the full version, which requires a license key for activation. More detail on each version is on the developer's page.
FilePathFinder is listed as free in this catalog. The full version requires a license key for activation, while the demo version cannot be activated at all and carries a "Demo" label next to the logo during installation or launch. Because licensing terms can change, refer to the developer's page for current licensing details, how to obtain a key, and what each version includes before you commit to a workflow around it.
FilePathFinder Pro includes the Batch Render&Relink tool, which organizes asset files for 3D model and material libraries in batch mode. It can batch relink multiple files using Fast Mode and render thumbnails for 3ds Max scenes, material libraries, and IES files, making it possible to gather and compile many assets at once. This tool is part of the Pro version only, so it is not included in the Light version.
FilePathFinder supports almost all known renderers and plug-ins, so it can track and relink external assets across a wide range of setups. It also handles XREF files and, in Interactive Mode, displays the files linked to selected objects and lets you place materials and bitmap textures into the Material Editor. For the specific renderers and plug-ins covered by your version, check the developer's page for the current compatibility details.
