Why we like it

Restore State earns its place for turning incremental modelling into savable, restorable steps managed entirely from a panel, including support for applied modifiers and Geometry node setups.

What is Restore State?

Restore State is a Blender add-on from KVD that manages modelling progress through a panel of buttons. Select a mesh object and press Save Current State, and the saved state appears in the panel as the object's name and a state number, with location and rotation stored too. Changes in edit or object mode, added modifiers, and materials can each be saved as new states, and Restore buttons return the object to an earlier one.

The version 3 rewrite lets you go back to a state even after a modifier has been applied, and you can change the parameters in the modifiers at any time. You can also add Geometry node setups to objects, keeping different saved states that each hold other parameters. Just avoid applying or deleting the geometry node setup, since that breaks the list.

Restore and Clear buttons only enable for a selected object that has saved states. Clear States removes states you no longer need, while Clear All States removes the object's name from the panel. A toggle button shows all objects with saved states as wireframe, and the Rename Option checkbox lets you rename an object while keeping its saved states available.

Who is Restore State best for?

Restore State is best for blender users who model in steps and want to save progress and return to earlier states of an object.

How much does Restore State cost?

Restore State is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Restore State work with Blender 5.0?

Restore State was updated in version 3.2 for Blender 5.0 and later, so it targets recent releases of the software. If you're running an earlier build, check the developer's page to confirm which Blender versions the add-on supports before installing. The add-on lives in a panel where you save and restore object states, so it works within Blender's standard interface once it is installed and enabled.

Can Restore State go back after a modifier is applied?

Restore State lets you return to a saved state even after a modifier has been applied, a capability introduced in the version 3 rewrite. You can also go back and change the parameters in the modifiers rather than being locked into applied results. Each saved step is stored in the panel as the object's name and a state number, so you can jump back to earlier versions of the object whenever you need to during modelling.

How do I save a state in Restore State?

Restore State saves progress through a panel: select your mesh object and press the Save Current State button. The saved state then appears in the panel as the object's name and a state number, and its location and rotation are stored too. Making changes in edit or object mode, adding modifiers, or adding materials and then saving again creates additional states, and you return to any of them using the Restore buttons.

Does Restore State work with Geometry Nodes?

Restore State supports adding Geometry node setups to your objects, and you can keep different saved states that each hold other parameters. One important caveat from the developer: do not apply or delete the geometry node setup, because doing so will break your list of saved states. Aside from that, geometry node parameters can be varied across states and restored from the panel like other saved changes to the object.

Is Restore State free?

Restore State is listed as free in this catalog, so you can add it to your Blender setup without a purchase. Licensing terms can change over time, so check the developer's page for the current details before you download it. The add-on also ships with documentation, which is worth reviewing to understand how saving, restoring, and clearing states behaves alongside modifiers and Geometry node setups.
