Cinemage earns its place for a color-correction approach that goes beyond balancing whites and tonal ranges, working instead through paired tints and blend modes to enhance footage. A demo video is available.
Sheffield Softworks Cinemage is a color corrector for After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, and Premiere Pro. Rather than simply balancing whites and toning highlights, midrange, and shadows, it is designed to enhance footage. It is based around the concept of paired tints.
The hue, intensity, and relationship of the two tints are set through onscreen controls: a double hue ring and a pairing slider. Pulling a tint ring further from the center makes it more intense, and the pairing slider aligns the hues, defaulting to 180° apart so the averaged effect is neutral. In practice each tint can affect the image differently, especially with the built-in masks. Guides can be dimmed or removed, and a peek button shows the image with no color correction for comparison.
The inspector offers basic controls for presets, Strength, Balance, and Mix, plus advanced controls for Soften/Sharpen, blend modes, masking, and retaining luma and/or color. Both tints are applied with blend modes, standard Photoshop modes with a few extensions, and can be combined through luminance or saturation masks. Tint 1 can smooth by decreasing local contrast, while tint 2, applied after tint 1, can sharpen by increasing it.
Sheffield Softworks Cinemage is best for enhancing footage through paired tints, such as generating warm highlights and cool shadows, in After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, or Premiere Pro.
