Why we like it

Speed Lines earns its place in the aescripts library for its broad version support, running from After Effects CS5.5 through 2020, and for handling parented objects and expressions.

What is Speed Lines?

Speed Lines is a script for After Effects that attaches strokes to your animated object. It applies the current settings to a Shape Layer with the Create Speed Lines button, and settings can be updated even after the script has run using the Update Speed Lines button. The script analyzes each frame to account for expressions and parented objects, so it functions even when other scripts and expressions are in use.

Styling of the strokes is customizable. Controls include Number of Lines for how many strokes appear behind the animated object, Separation for the distance between individual strokes, Thickness for stroke size, and Offset Angle for the degree at which strokes are separated. Speed Lines Length sets how far the strokes extend from the starting point, while Speed Lines Offset sets how far the lines are separated from that point.

The end point can be locked with Speed Lines Enable End, and when enabled, Speed Lines End moves that end point. Speed Lines is compatible with a wide range of After Effects versions, from CS5.5 through After Effects 2020.

Who is Speed Lines best for?

Speed Lines is best for after Effects motion designers adding trailing strokes to animated objects.

How much does Speed Lines cost?

Check the developer's page to confirm compatibility with your specific version before installing.

Does Speed Lines work with expressions and parented objects?

Speed Lines analyzes each frame to account for expressions and parented objects, so it can attach strokes to an object even when using other scripts and expressions. Support for parenting and expressions was added in an earlier update to the script. After running the script, you can use the Update Speed Lines button to re-apply your current settings if the animation or setup changes.

Is Speed Lines free to use?

Speed Lines is listed as free in this catalog. Pricing and licensing can change over time, and the script's recent updates have centered on its licensing framework, so check the developer's page on aescripts for the current terms before downloading. That page is also the place to confirm the latest version and view any additional details about how the script is distributed.

Can I change stroke settings after running Speed Lines?

Speed Lines lets you update settings even after the script has run. The Create Speed Lines button applies your current settings to a Shape Layer, and the Update Speed Lines button re-applies changes afterward. You can adjust the number of lines, separation, thickness, offset angle, length, offset, and the end point, giving you room to refine the look without starting over from scratch.
