Why we like it

Version 2.1 added support for Apple Silicon (M1) and MFR, alongside the redesigned native code implementation from version 2.

What is YY_Voronoi 2?

YY_Voronoi 2 generates procedural Voronoi textures inside After Effects. It can be used for a range of textures, from terrain maps to water caustics to abstract backgrounds, and layering different Voronoi patterns lets you achieve variations in complexity. The plugin exposes controls for offset, grid size, contrast, brightness and dispersion, along with a random seed to change the cells' start behavior.

Color calculation modes cover Square Distance (the default, fast option), Absolute Distance with high contrast and linear falloff, Edge Distance based on distance from the cell boundary, and Discrete modes for a mosaic effect with no color variation within cells. Distance metrics include Euclidean for organic, unconstrained boundaries and Manhattan for sharp 45 degree boundaries. Dispersion can be driven by the current layer's pixels, where black means no dispersion and white means full dispersion.

Version 2 introduced a completely redesigned algorithm and native code implementation for improved render speed and compatibility, plus repeat options for horizontal and vertical grid tiling. Evolution settings animate the cells, with an evolution period for seamless loops. It maintains full backwards compatibility with previous versions.

Who is YY_Voronoi 2 best for?

YY_Voronoi 2 is best for after Effects artists building procedural textures such as terrain maps, water caustics and abstract backgrounds.

How much does YY_Voronoi 2 cost?

YY_Voronoi 2 is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects versions does YY_Voronoi 2 support?

YY_Voronoi 2 is compatible with a broad range of After Effects releases, including After Effects 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, CC 2019, CC 2018, CC 2017, CC 2015.3, CC 2015, CC 2014, CC, CS6, CS5.5 and CS5. Version 2.1 also added support for Apple Silicon (M1) and MFR, so it covers both older and current setups. If you are upgrading from an earlier version, the plugin maintains full backwards compatibility with previous versions.

Does YY_Voronoi 2 run on Apple Silicon Macs?

YY_Voronoi 2 added support for Apple Silicon (M1) in version 2.1, released March 12, 2022, along with support for MFR. Earlier updates also brought support for macOS 10.15 Catalina in version 2.0.2. Version 2 introduced a native code implementation, which the developer notes was made for improved render speed and compatibility. For the current licensing terms and to confirm your exact system, check the developer's page.

How does dispersion work in YY_Voronoi 2?

YY_Voronoi 2 includes a dispersion control that sets the randomness of the cell distribution. It also offers a Use Image To Disperse option, which uses the color of a layer's pixels to control the dispersion amount: black means no dispersion and white means full dispersion. This is one of the cell dispersion settings introduced in version 2. Alongside dispersion, you can adjust offset, grid size, contrast, brightness and a random seed to change the start behavior of the cells.

Is YY_Voronoi 2 free?

YY_Voronoi 2 is listed as free in this catalog. Because licensing terms can change over time, check Andrew Yang's developer page for the current details before you rely on it in a project. The plugin ranks 866 in popularity on aescripts, where it is available. It supports a wide span of After Effects versions and includes Apple Silicon and MFR support as of version 2.1.
