Why we like it

Earns its place in the superhive library for turning an animated value into a curve- or mesh-based waveform, with the whole widget driven by animating a single Empty object.

What is Styriam Waveform?

Styriam Waveform builds a widget-like component in Blender that charts a real-time value of a variable as a function of time. The generated widget is made of curves, drivers, constraints and modifiers. It targets oscilloscope simulations, audio soundwaves and abstract forms for music videos. Using it stays straightforward: animating the main Empty object is all that is needed, and the waveform can be shaped further with curve or other modifiers.

The workflow starts in Object Mode through Add -> Mesh/Curve -> Waveform. After setting up initial values, you animate the Delta Z channel of the Animation Data Holder object, where the first keyframe is inserted by default. Blender's Key -> Bake Sound to F-Curve can drive that channel. A curve waveform gives smoother results, while a mesh version offers more artistic control, and subdivision surface and displace modifiers open up various abstract effects.

The add-on lists support for Blender 2.91 through 5.0 and is distributed under the GPL license. A demo video is available.

Who is Styriam Waveform best for?

Styriam Waveform is best for blender artists simulating oscilloscopes and audio soundwaves or creating abstract forms for music videos.

How much does Styriam Waveform cost?

Styriam Waveform is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Which Blender versions does Styriam Waveform support?

Styriam Waveform lists compatibility with Blender 2.91 through 5.0. Its release history reflects that range: version 1.1.1 added Blender 3.4 support and version 1.1.2 added Blender 5 support. Earlier, version 1.1.0 tied the waveform animation to the "Frame" property of the Animation Data Holder rather than the scene frame rate. If you run a version inside the listed 2.91 to 5.0 window, the add-on is intended to work, and the developer's page is the place to confirm details for your specific build.

How do I create a waveform with Styriam Waveform in Blender?

Styriam Waveform is created in Object Mode by opening Add -> Mesh/Curve -> Waveform. After the widget is added, you set up its initial values, then animate the Delta Z channel of the Animation Data Holder object, where the first keyframe is inserted by default. To feed it audio, Blender's Key -> Bake Sound to F-Curve can be used on that channel. From there the generated widget, made of curves, drivers, constraints and modifiers, updates as you animate the main Empty object.

Does Styriam Waveform work with NLA strips?

Styriam Waveform does not support NLA. If your animation uses NLA strips, they need to be baked down to a single action that is linked to an Animation Data Holder before the widget can use them. The add-on's animation data can also be linked from another object that has a Delta Location Z channel, in which case all parts of the widget must be synced to the new animation data through the Styriam -> Waveform -> Sync Animation option in the N toolshelf.

How much does Styriam Waveform cost?

Styriam Waveform is listed as free in this catalog, and it is distributed under the GPL license. Pricing and licensing can change over time, so the developer's page is the best place to confirm the current terms before you download. The add-on has recorded over 40 sales and was published on the superhive marketplace, where you can also find the release notes covering its version history from the initial release through Blender 5 support.

What is the difference between the curve and mesh waveform in Styriam Waveform?

Styriam Waveform can generate the waveform as either a curve or a mesh. A curve waveform gives smoother results, while a mesh gives more artistic control. On a mesh version you can add subdivision surface and displace modifiers to reach various abstract effects. The waveform path itself can be shaped by animating the Controller Curve's custom-shape points or by applying a Curve Modifier, and the "Frame" property of the Animation Data Holder controls how fast the f-curve moves through the graph window.
