TweiNa earns its place in the aescripts library for handling layer transfer from Photoshop and Illustrator into After Effects directly, converting vector and text layers and preserving smart object transformations. A demo video is available.
TweiNa is a panel from Parable Pomelo that pushes Illustrator and Photoshop layers into After Effects without the standard import process. You can send an arbitrary number of Photoshop layers across, and multiple artboards are treated as one large comp. Imported comps can be auto cropped to fit their content.
During transfer, Photoshop vector layers become After Effects shape layers and text layers become editable After Effects text. Smart objects are converted to link layers with their position, scale and rotation preserved, though the link goes missing if the original file is lost. To keep projects lean, TweiNa can convert groups into smart objects, delete unused Photoshop assets in After Effects, and let you push one of several near-identical layers and reuse it after precomposing.
Some elements do not carry over: layer masks are not editable in After Effects, smart filters cannot be imported, and a root level group's clip mask and layer style are left out. The current version is 1.2.1, released on April 11, 2024.
TweiNa is best for after Effects artists who build compositions from Photoshop and Illustrator artwork and want to move those layers over without the standard import process.
TweiNa is completely free to download and use.
TweiNa supports After Effects 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, CC 2019, CC 2018 and CC 2017. On the source side it works with Photoshop across the same 2017 to 2023 range, and with Illustrator from CC 2014 through 2023. Version 1.1 also added support for M1 Mac users, who can run it by installing the TweiNa UXP panel and the TweiNa listener extension. If your host versions fall inside these ranges, the panel should connect your Photoshop and Illustrator files to After Effects.
TweiNa converts Photoshop smart objects into link layers in After Effects and preserves their transformations, including position, scale and rotation. Because these become linked layers, the link goes missing if the original linked file is lost, so keep the source files in place. The panel can also convert groups into smart objects to help keep the layer count low, and for different layers that are essentially the same you can push one of them and reuse it after precomposing in After Effects.
TweiNa does not bring everything across from Photoshop. The current build is version 1.2.1, released on April 11, 2024, which added a Reload Panel button for the UXP panel through the top right dropdown menu for cases where the panel button does not respond.
