Unravel earns its place in the aescripts library as a focused project-panel organizer, with version 1.2 adding folder-aware sorting and a responsive floating panel.
Unravel is a script for After Effects that organizes the elements in your project panel, with a few extra features alongside its core sorting.
A pulldown menu named "Keep content inside selected folders" lets you sort the content within selected folders while keeping it inside those folders. The tool runs as a floating panel with a responsive UI: when you drop the panel height below 200 px, the menu collapses to the main button. To save your current settings, "Allow scripts to write file and access network" needs to be enabled in your After Effects preferences.
Unravel is compatible with After Effects from CC 2018 through 2025, covering CC 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. The current version is 1.2, released May 23, 2023, which added the folder-sorting option and the responsive floating panel, along with a fix for preferences not being saved correctly.
Unravel is best for after Effects users who want to organize elements in the project panel and sort content within folders in place.
Unravel is completely free to download and use.
Unravel is compatible with After Effects 2025, and also runs on 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020, plus the older CC 2019 and CC 2018 releases. That range covers most installations still in active use, so you should be able to add it to your current setup regardless of which of these versions you have. For current version details and any conditions, check Konstantin Reinhart's page on aescripts before installing.
Unravel needs the "Allow scripts to write file and access network" option enabled in your After Effects preferences to save your current settings. If that box is unchecked, the script cannot store your configuration. You can enable it in your After Effects preferences and then reopen Unravel. Note that version 1.2 also included a fix for preferences that were not being saved correctly, so running the latest release helps as well.
Unravel includes a pulldown menu called "Keep content inside selected folders" that sorts the content within selected folders while keeping it inside those folders. In other words, the items get reordered without being moved out of their folders. This option was added in version 1.2, released May 23, 2023, as a requested feature. Alongside its main job of organizing the elements in your project panel, it gives you a way to tidy folder contents in place.
Unravel is listed as free here in our catalog. For the most current licensing terms and any conditions, check Konstantin Reinhart's page on aescripts, since developer terms can change over time. Once you have it installed, remember to enable the "Allow scripts to write file and access network" preference in After Effects so the script can save your current settings. Unravel runs as a floating panel inside After Effects.
