versionUp earns its place in the aescripts library for handling version numbers across the whole file path, and comp and folder names, not just the file name, and for offering non-UI scripts and bindable shortcuts. It supports releases from CS5 through After Effects 2026.
versionUp is a script for After Effects that moves through the versions of your footage. Clicking the up and down arrows cycles between versions, while Shift+Click skips straight to the newest or oldest versions available. Option+Click (Alt on PC) increments a letter following the version number, so v001a becomes v001b. The script automatically skips versions that don't exist.
It works with stills, movies, and image sequences, and will version up or down comp and folder names as well. versionUp updates every version number in the file path, not only the one in the file name. A settings panel provides options to customize the script.
Included non-UI scripts can be assigned to Kbar buttons, and custom keyboard shortcuts can be bound to perform all versionUp actions. It runs across a wide range of After Effects releases, from CS5 through 2026.
versionUp is best for after Effects users who work with versioned footage and need to step through, jump to, or increment version numbers directly in the project.
versionUp is completely free to download and use.
versionUp is compatible with a broad span of After Effects releases, covering 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020, along with CC 2019, CC 2018, CC 2017, CC 2015.3, CC 2015, CC 2014, CC, CS6, CS5.5, and CS5. That range means the script works across older and current installs, so you can run it on the version you already have. Version 1.12, released November 21, 2024, is the current release.
versionUp includes standalone, non-UI scripts that can be assigned to Kbar buttons for quick access. You can also bind custom keyboard shortcuts to perform all versionUp actions, so cycling versions doesn't require the panel each time. Inside the panel itself, you click the up and down arrows to move through versions, Shift+Click to jump to the newest or oldest, and Option+Click (Alt on PC) to increment a trailing letter. A settings panel lets you customize these behaviors to your liking.
versionUp works with stills, movies, and image sequences, and it can also version up or down comp and folder names. It updates all version numbers found in the file path, not just the one in the file name, and it automatically skips versions that don't exist. One caveat to note: versioning to an image sequence with a different start frame will likely fail. Multiple unique version numbers in the same file name or path can also produce unexpected results.
versionUp is listed as free here in the catalog. For current licensing terms and any conditions on use, check the developer's page on aescripts, where the download is hosted. The script is developed by Jeremy Cox and the latest version is 1.12, updated November 21, 2024, which fixed a hang that occurred when searching for the minimum version found a version zero.
