Voxel Animater is a script for 3ds Max that turns an image sequence into an animated voxel arrangement. For each pixel it creates a chosen primitive type, adjusts that primitive's length according to the pixel's value, and animates the result across the sequence.
Several parameters are exposed for the setup. You can define the voxel shape from Box, Chamfer Box, Capsule or Spindle, and set voxel size, base height and maximum height. Voxel color can be solid or randomized for each pixel, and you can control the space between each voxel.
The developer advises against relatively high resolutions: on a 2.2 GHz machine with 2 GB of RAM, 200 x 200 is described as high-resolution. Using high-resolution images may take significant processing time and can cause halts, errors and freezes, so it is used at your own risk. The script is compatible with 3ds Max 9 or later.
