Why we like it

Earns its place in the Toolfarm library as a group-based approach to layer management in After Effects, with broad version support from CC 2018 through AE 2026 on both Windows and Mac.

What is Workflower?

Workflower is a group and layer management script for After Effects, built by Constantin Maier. It lets you create groups and sub-groups, collapse and expand them, select and move groups, parent group layers, and disable, solo or lock them together. You can relabel groups, duplicate them, adjust group opacity, create group mattes, and convert groups to and from precomps. Ungrouping, dissolving, deleting groups and creating group adjustment layers are also supported.

Beyond grouping, Workflower includes functions for renaming layers, precomposing, and batch-changing attributes on comp items in the project panel. It can pre-render comp items and offers a shortcuts panel, along with KBar support introduced in version 1.0.4. Layer comments can be enabled to work alongside add-ons like Flatten Layers and AutoSway.

Workflower is compatible with After Effects 2026 back through CC 2018 and works on both Windows and Mac, with a few limitations for Mac users and for Japanese users on Windows. Projects can be exchanged between Windows and Mac.

Who is Workflower best for?

Workflower is best for after Effects artists who organize layers into groups and want group, precompose, rename, and pre-render tools in one panel.

How much does Workflower cost?

Workflower is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Which After Effects versions does Workflower support?

Workflower supports After Effects 2026, 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021, 2020, CC 2019, and CC 2018. Full compatibility with After Effects 2026 was added in a recent update. It runs on both Windows and Mac, though Mac users and Japanese users on Windows face a few limitations noted on the developer's page. Check there for the specifics before installing on those setups, since the developer documents exactly what differs across platforms.

Does Workflower work on both Windows and Mac?

Workflower runs on Windows and Mac, and projects created with it can be exchanged between the two platforms. There are a few limitations for Mac users and for Japanese users on Windows, which the developer's page and F.A.Q. section cover in detail. A recent update also fixed installation issues some Mac users experienced with shortcut slots and the WQ plug-in, so make sure you are on the latest release.

Does Workflower work with KBar?

Workflower includes KBar support, which was added in version 1.0.4, so you can trigger its functions from KBar. It also has its own shortcuts panel, now fitted with a scrollbar to make it smaller on low-resolution monitors, and lets you assign shortcuts to functions like Push Frame to Photoshop and Create Control. Shortcut behaviour can be disabled under Settings > Shortcuts if you run into issues.

Is Workflower free to download?

Workflower is listed as free in this catalog, so there's no cost to add it here. Licensing terms can change over time, though, so it's worth checking the developer's page for the current details before you download. On the technical side, a recent release updated Workflower's license framework to version 4.4.2. If you have questions about platform limitations or exchanging projects between Windows and Mac, the developer's F.A.Q. section covers those details as well.
