Why we like it

YY_HexTex earns its place in the aescripts library for keeping its hexagon grid fully animatable in the comp, with no nested precomps required.

What is YY_HexTex?

YY_HexTex is a plugin for After Effects that generates tiled hexagon textures. The grid is driven by a set of controls: Anchor Point shifts the grid offset, Size sets the diameter of each hexagon, and Angle rotates the whole grid. Thickness and Hardness govern the border between hexagons, while Color and Alpha set the appearance of the grid itself.

Two toggles change how the pattern reads. Invert Alpha draws filled hexagons instead of gridlines, and Clip RGB uses the original layer as an alpha matte for the hexagons. A Blend Mode option controls how the result blends with the background image, with 20 blend modes added in an earlier release.

Every parameter can be animated directly in the comp, without dealing with nested precomps. Version 1.3, released on March 12, 2022, added Apple M1 and Multi-Frame Rendering support and fixed a low-resolution preview of single-pixel thickness. Compatibility spans a broad range of releases, from CS4 through After Effects 2024.

Who is YY_HexTex best for?

YY_HexTex is best for after Effects artists who need to generate animatable hexagon grid textures directly in the comp.

How much does YY_HexTex cost?

Frequently asked questions

Does YY_HexTex work with After Effects CS6?

YY_HexTex is compatible with a wide range of After Effects versions, running from CS4, CS5 and CS5.5 through CS6, the CC releases, and up to CC 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024. CS6 support was added in an earlier update to the plugin. If you are on a build outside those listed, check the developer's page on aescripts for the current compatibility details before installing.

Does YY_HexTex support Apple M1?

YY_HexTex added support for Apple M1 in version 1.3, released on March 12, 2022. That same update also introduced MFR (Multi-Frame Rendering) support and fixed a low-resolution preview issue affecting single-pixel thickness. An earlier release had added macOS 10.15 Catalina support. For the most current information on Apple Silicon behaviour and any later changes, the developer's page on aescripts is the place to check.

Is YY_HexTex free?

YY_HexTex is listed as free in this catalog. Licensing terms can change over time, so for current details on cost and usage rights, check the developer's page on aescripts. The plugin was created by Andrew Yang, and its most recent version here is 1.3, dated March 12, 2022. That release added Apple M1 and MFR support alongside a preview fix for single-pixel thickness.

Can I animate YY_HexTex parameters without precomps?

YY_HexTex lets you animate every parameter directly in the comp, without needing to set up nested precomps. That includes the grid offset (Anchor Point), hexagon Size, border Thickness and Hardness, rotation Angle, Color and Alpha. You can also toggle Invert Alpha to draw filled hexagons instead of gridlines, choose a Blend Mode for how the result composites with the background, and use Clip RGB to treat the original layer as an alpha matte for the hexagons.
