Alpha Trees earns its place in the superhive library by swapping million-polygon tree models for four-vertex cards that still react to light and translucency. The version 2.2 update adds Scatter 5 integration, a reworked weight layers engine and a rewritten preset system, and a demo video is available.
Alpha Trees is a Blender addon from Strike Digital that renders forests without the heavy geometry of conventional 3D tree models. Traditional trees often carry millions of polygons and complex materials that slow rendering, clutter the viewport and can overload GPU memory. Alpha Trees replaces them with flat tree cards, each built from just four vertices, paired with an advanced material that reacts to lighting and translucency so the cards still read as three-dimensional. Because the cards are 2D, they automatically face the active camera.
The addon ships with around 150 trees — roughly 70 deciduous, 50 coniferous and 20 small trees and shrubs — searchable by name, species, size or tags. You can also convert almost any 3D tree into an Alpha Tree, with color, normal, shadow and mask passes rendered and combined automatically. Each tree's material is adjustable, from color and translucency to dead leaves, trunk color and snow.
The Pro edition adds a geometry-nodes scattering system covering density, scale, rotation, randomness and wind, a weight layers system driven by slope, height or camera distance, camera culling for off-screen trees, and Scatter 5 integration with 28 ready-made biomes. Quality settings from high (2k) to low (256p) further reduce memory usage.
Alpha Trees - Render Massive Forests, Fast is best for blender artists building large nature and forest scenes who need to keep polygon counts, memory use and render times low, especially on GPUs with limited VRAM.
Alpha Trees - Render Massive Forests, Fast is completely free to download and use.
Alpha Trees comes in two editions. Both Lite and Pro can import individual trees and generate new ones from 3D models. The differences are in scale and automation: Lite includes 50 trees while Pro includes 150. Pro also adds the automatic scattering system for covering terrain with trees, and camera culling that removes off-screen trees to save memory and render time. Lite has neither automatic scattering nor camera culling. If your work centres on placing individual trees, Lite covers that; larger scattered forests call for Pro.
Alpha Trees is built to run on modest hardware. All of its promotional images were rendered on a four-year-old laptop GPU with 2GB of VRAM, the minimum recommended for Cycles, and rendering the same scenes with conventional 3D tree models on that hardware would not be possible. If memory is still tight, you can drop each tree's quality from high (2k) down to low (256p), which reduces memory usage by up to 64 times. Trees outside the camera's view are also culled automatically in the Pro edition.
Alpha Trees can convert almost any 3D tree into an Alpha Tree in a few steps. The addon automatically renders out color, normal, shadow and mask passes from the source model, then combines them into an Alpha Tree that you can use like any of the built-in ones. This sits alongside the roughly 150 trees that ship with the addon, which you can filter by name, species, size or tags. Both the Lite and Pro editions can import individual trees and generate new ones this way.
Alpha Trees added Scatter 5 (Geo Scatter) integration in version 2.2. Connecting the two gives you access to Scatter 5's distribution features, including clumping and manual distribution, on top of Alpha Trees' own geometry-nodes scattering. It also brings 28 ready-made biomes, so you can pick a biome and scatter a forest with a single click. This integration is part of the Pro edition, which is also the edition that includes automatic scattering. The version 2.2 update additionally reworked the weight layers engine and rewrote the preset system.
Alpha Trees is listed as free in this catalog. Licensing and edition details, including the split between the Lite and Pro editions, can change over time, so check Strike Digital's own page for the current terms before you download. The developer also maintains a release post covering the full list of changes in version 2.2, along with updated documentation covering both new and existing topics.
