Ao Connector stands out in the Superhive library for automating a repetitive node-wrangling task and for its hybrid handling of both procedural and texture-based AO.
Ao Connector handles the full ambient occlusion setup process in Blender. Rather than manually building AO nodes, color ramps, and mix nodes for each material, the addon creates complete node trees and connects everything to your Principled BSDF. It recognizes existing material setups and works with common naming conventions such as basecolor, diffuse, albedo, and _basecolor, and it supports nodes placed between Base Color and the Principled BSDF as well as ORM textures.
The addon takes a hybrid approach by combining baked AO textures with Blender's AO node. When existing AO texture maps are present, it detects them and builds a connection workflow, letting you keep detailed shadows from texture maps alongside procedural AO adjustments. A control panel gathers the relevant settings, including Distance and Samples, Intensity with live preview, Inside/Only Local behavior options, a Preview toggle, and Shadow Color.
Ao Connector works across multiple selected objects at once and preserves original material connections. Additional workflow tools include material locking, safe disconnection that removes AO while keeping original connections, a texture suffix manager that adds a "_Diffuse" suffix to Base Color textures, and batch operations for updating AO settings across selected objects.
Ao Connector is best for blender users setting up ambient occlusion across materials, including architectural visualization, product rendering, and character and creature work.
Ao Connector is completely free to download and use.
Ao Connector recognizes common naming conventions such as basecolor, diffuse, albedo, and _basecolor, and it also supports nodes placed between Base Color and the Principled BSDF as well as ORM textures. For textures that still aren't detected, the texture suffix manager can add a "_Diffuse" suffix to Base Color textures across your selected materials, updating all Base Color texture names at once so they are identified and included in the AO automation. This helps bring materials that weren't recognized automatically into the workflow.
Ao Connector works on multiple selected objects simultaneously. You can select your objects and run the AO setup across all of them in one action, and it preserves your original material connections while doing so. Batch operations let you update AO settings across all selected objects at once, and the safe disconnection tool can later remove AO while keeping the original connections intact. Material locking is also available to protect specific materials from changes during these operations.
Ao Connector provides a single control panel with the settings for tuning ambient occlusion. It includes Distance and Samples for adjusting AO quality and reach, Intensity for controlling AO strength with a live preview, and Inside/Only Local options for advanced AO behavior. A Preview toggle lets you compare the material with and without AO, and Shadow Color allows you to tint the ambient occlusion shadows. All of these controls are collected in one compact panel.
Ao Connector is listed as free in this catalog. Licensing terms can change over time, so for the current licensing details and any usage conditions it's best to check the developer's page directly. The addon includes documentation, and a demo video is also available if you want to see more before installing. This entry covers the addon as offered for Blender through the Superhive listing.
