SnapSave Pro earns its place in the superhive library for keeping version control entirely inside Blender, storing each backup as a plain standalone .blend rather than relying on Git or an external format.
SnapSave Pro gives Blender a version history that lives inside the application, with no Git and no external tools. You create named manual backups carrying a label, a tag (Stable, Milestone, or WIP), and notes, and can trigger one instantly with the Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut. Every snapshot captures a viewport thumbnail, and the complete history is persistent, reloading when you reopen the file.
Beyond saving, the add-on covers restoring and referencing. Any past version can open in a second Blender window running alongside your current session, so your work stays untouched while you compare or inspect. You can append specific objects from any snapshot into the current scene, overwrite an existing backup in place, or run a one-click restore in the current window with a confirm dialog.
Auto-save adds crash protection on a configurable timer that fires only when there are unsaved changes, with a live countdown and progress bar in the panel. Manual backups and auto-saves live in separate folders with independent history lists and a filter bar. Each backup is a complete, standalone .blend file with no compression, openable in any Blender version.
Autosave & Professional Version Control For Blender - Snapsave Pro is best for blender artists who want version history, milestone backups, and auto-save crash protection managed from inside Blender.
Autosave & Professional Version Control For Blender - Snapsave Pro is completely free to download and use.
SnapSave Pro is tested on Blender 5.0+ and on Blender 4.2 through 4.6, and lists compatibility with Blender 4.0 and 4.1 through a legacy .py install. Blender 3.x is not supported. The add-on runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. If you are on a recent release in the 4.2-and-above range, that is the recommended path, while older 4.0 to 4.1 setups use the legacy installation method noted by the developer.
SnapSave Pro installs like a standard Blender add-on. Download the snapsave-1.5.0.zip package, then open Edit, Preferences, Add-ons in Blender to add it. This method is recommended for Blender 4.2 and above, while users on Blender 4.0 or 4.1 install through a legacy .py method instead. Once active, the add-on's panel gives you access to backups, the auto-save timer, and the snapshot history directly inside Blender.
SnapSave Pro saves each backup as a complete, standalone .blend file with no compression and no proprietary format. Because of that, every backup can be opened in any version of Blender, whether or not SnapSave is installed. Manual backups are written to a yourfile_backups folder and auto-saves to a separate yourfile_autosave folder, each with its own human-readable JSON index. Your working file is never modified during this process.
SnapSave Pro's auto-save uses a configurable timer that you can set anywhere from 1 to 120 minutes. It only fires when the file has unsaved changes, and the panel shows a live countdown and progress bar so you can see when the next save runs. When the auto-save limit is reached, the oldest auto-saves are purged automatically. These auto-saves stay in their own folder, kept separate from your manual backup history.
SnapSave Pro is listed as free in this catalog. For current licensing terms and any conditions around use or updates, check the developer's page, since availability can change over time. On the functionality side, the add-on also supports migration from SnapSave Basic, moving your existing history across automatically, along with custom save folder support so your backups can live at a path you choose.
