Why we like it

Brush Creator stands out in the superhive library for turning a folder of alphas or EXRs into a consistent, catalog-organized brush set with icons and previews in one pass. Worth noting the current known issue: creating brushes in the user library does not work.

What is Brush Creator?

Brush Creator is a Blender add-on for batch-generating Sculpt brush assets from folders of alpha images and VDM EXR files. Instead of configuring brushes one at a time, you point it at a folder, select a registered Asset Library from a dropdown, enter a catalog name, set your brush options once, and let it build the set. The workflow runs in order: choose folder, pick Asset Library, set catalog and brush settings, create, then browse the assets.

Each generated brush gets a custom icon and a preview drawn from its source image, and brushes are saved into the catalog you name so large libraries stay organized. Consistent settings such as strength, stroke, mapping, and falloff apply across the whole batch. A Recursive Search option scans subfolders for packs arranged into nested directories, and brush names are derived from the source filenames.

VDM mode works with EXR sources and enforces Area Plane mapping when enabled. Version 1.2 was updated for Blender 5.0, with listed compatibility from Blender 4.5 to 5.1. One known issue remains: creating brushes in the user library does not currently work.

Who is Brush Creator best for?

Brush Creator is best for sculptors building personal brush libraries quickly, studios standardizing brush sets across machines and projects, VDM workflows that need clean Asset Browser organization, and brush pack imports where manual setup would otherwise take hours.

How much does Brush Creator cost?

Brush Creator is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Brush Creator work with Blender 5.0?

Brush Creator lists compatibility with Blender 4.5 through 5.1, and version 1.2 was updated specifically for Blender 5.0. If you're running a version in that range, the batch generation, Asset Library dropdown, catalog assignment, and VDM support should be available as described. For versions outside 4.5 to 5.1, check the developer's page before installing, since support isn't stated beyond that range. The add-on is distributed under the GPL license.

Can Brush Creator import VDM brushes from EXR files?

Brush Creator supports VDM brushes, but only from EXR sources. When VDM mode is enabled, the add-on handles the mapping automatically and enforces Area Plane, the required mapping for these brushes. Point the tool at a folder of EXRs, select your registered Asset Library, and enter a catalog name, then create the brushes. Each one still gets a custom icon and a preview from its source, and the assets are saved into the catalog you named so the output stays organized and easy to browse.

Does Brush Creator scan subfolders for large brush packs?

Brush Creator includes a Recursive Search option that scans subfolders, which helps when a brush pack is organized into nested directories. Enable it before running the batch, and the add-on picks up images across those subfolders in a single pass. Brush names are derived from the source filenames, so keeping filenames clean produces the best Asset Browser results. If an asset file with the same name already exists, it is replaced to keep the output consistent.

Can Brush Creator create brushes in the user library?

Brush Creator has a known issue with the user library: creating brushes there does not currently work, and the developer notes it is being looked into. For now, generate brushes into one of your registered Asset Libraries selected through the dropdown, and assign a catalog name so the assets stay organized. This path is the intended workflow and covers batch creation, icons, previews, and VDM support. Check the developer's page for updates on the fix.

Is Brush Creator free?

Brush Creator is listed as free in this catalog. Licensing and availability can change, so check the developer's page for current terms before downloading. The add-on is distributed under the GPL license. Once installed, you point it at a folder of alpha images or EXRs, select a registered Asset Library, set a catalog name, choose brush settings, and generate the full set in one run.
