Why we like it

Citigen earns its place in the superhive library for its unusual input method: you draw lines and planes, and the add-on turns them into a large-scale city aimed at high-resolution establishing shots for films.

What is Citigen?

Citigen is a Blender add-on for generating large-scale cities from your own input of lines and planes. It is aimed at high-resolution establishing shots of imaginary cities for films, at 4K or more rather than FHD video. Lines added on a plane turn into overpasses or bridges and divide the plane into city blocks.

The Citigen Core generator handles the city itself, while CEL, a dedicated environment tool, adds sea, desert and clouds and can animate the Sun and the clouds. A dedicated Animation Camera System sets up various animation cameras with a single click, and a dedicated Import/Export Tool imports custom assets and exports the city for UE5.

Citigen-Ultimate adds an Automated Crowds & Traffic Generator plus the Citigen Compositor for atmospheric haze and command-line batch rendering. Citigen 2026 also introduces a Preset System that saves a city as a preset and an Asset Pack System. MegaCitigen, a sibling of Citigen, is available for a flawless city model with bridges and intersections that make sense.

Who is Citigen best for?

Frequently asked questions

Does Citigen export cities to Unreal Engine 5?

Citigen exports finished cities to Unreal Engine 5 through its dedicated Import/Export Tool. The same tool also lets you import your own custom assets into the scene, so a city built in Blender can move into a UE5 pipeline. Beyond the export path, Citigen builds the city itself from your input of lines and planes: lines placed on a plane turn into overpasses or bridges and divide the plane into city blocks. For the finer details of the UE5 export workflow, check the developer's page.

What's the difference between Citigen and Citigen-Ultimate?

Citigen comes in two families, standard Citigen and Citigen-Ultimate. The standard Citigen editions do not include the crowds and traffic simulation or the Compositor. Citigen-Ultimate adds the Automated Crowds & Traffic Generator, which sets up crowds and traffic simulation for you, though you may need to adjust their speeds and locations a little. Citigen-Ultimate also includes the Citigen Compositor for adding atmospheric haze and generating command-line rendering batch files. Both families share the core generator, the CEL environment tool, the animation camera system, and the import/export tool.

Is Citigen free?

Citigen is listed as free in this catalog. The developer offers it in several editions, including Hobbyist licences that are not for commercial projects and Freelance and Studio licences that are, with single-user and multi-user seat limits. Because those licensing tiers and any current terms can change, check the developer's page for the exact conditions that apply to your use, whether personal or commercial. That page also clarifies which features belong to the standard Citigen editions versus Citigen-Ultimate, such as the crowds and traffic simulation and the Compositor.

What's new in Citigen 2026?

Citigen 2026 introduces several additions. The Preset System for Citigen cities lets you save a city as a preset, which the developer says cuts hard disk space by almost 99 percent. The Citigen Compositor, available in Citigen-Ultimate only, adds atmospheric haze and includes a command-line rendering batch file generator. The Asset Pack System lets you drag and drop a .zip asset pack onto the Asset Pack Panel to install it, and you can then use those packs to add to or replace default assets. Check the description to avoid duplicate purchases.

Can Citigen render animation scenes in the background?

Citigen's Compositor includes a command-line rendering batch file generator, available in Citigen-Ultimate only. It produces a batch file, or a set of files on macOS, that lets you render your animation scenes in the background. The Compositor's other job is adding atmospheric haze to the city for added realism. Both capabilities were introduced in Citigen 2026, so the background rendering workflow depends on having the Ultimate edition rather than the standard Citigen editions. For setup specifics, refer to the developer's page.
