Why we like it

A fairly complete dark scheme for the Maxscript Editor in the ScriptSpot library, offering an installer script and editable symbolic color values.

What is DarkScintilla: Maxscript Editor dark scheme?

DarkScintilla replaces the default Maxscript Editor colors with a dark scheme inspired by dark schemes available for other IDEs. Scintilla is the editor's core, and the developer integrated the color scheme and font settings used in IDEs such as MonoDevelop, FlashDevelop, Eclipse and Visual Studio. Nearly all of the color settings previously held in maxscript.properties were transferred to MXS_EditorUser.properties using symbolic color names.

The scheme uses Microsoft's Consolas font, which is freely downloadable from Microsoft via a link in the zip. Colors can be changed by editing the self-explaining symbolic color values in MXS_EditorUser.properties. There is no adapted html.properties, so HTML file display within the Maxscript Editor is not recolored.

From version 1.2 onward, an installer script is included: drag and drop the complete .mzp package into a 3ds Max viewport and the installation script guides you through installing or uninstalling. Back up your original files first. DarkScintilla is listed as compatible with 3ds Max 2008 and up.

Who is DarkScintilla: Maxscript Editor dark scheme best for?

DarkScintilla: Maxscript Editor dark scheme is best for 3ds Max scripters who want a darker Maxscript Editor in place of the default colors.

How much does DarkScintilla: Maxscript Editor dark scheme cost?

Frequently asked questions

Does DarkScintilla work with 3ds Max 2008 and later versions?

DarkScintilla is listed as compatible with 3ds Max 2008 and up, so it should apply across those releases and newer versions of Max. It's a dark color scheme for the Maxscript Editor, whose core is Scintilla, and it reworks the editor's colors and font settings. From version 1.2 onward it ships with an installer script, and it's confirmed here at version 1.2d. Back up your original files before installing, since the scheme replaces settings in the editor's properties files.

How do I install DarkScintilla in 3ds Max?

DarkScintilla includes an installer script from version 1.2 onward. Drag and drop the complete .mzp package into a 3ds Max viewport, and the installation script guides you through the installation or uninstallation process. Back up your original files first, since the scheme replaces editor settings. One thing to watch: Internet Explorer tends to rename .mzp downloads to .zip, so change the extension back to .mzp before running it. The scheme moves nearly all color settings into MXS_EditorUser.properties.

What font does DarkScintilla use?

DarkScintilla uses Microsoft's Consolas font, which is freely downloadable from Microsoft; the zip includes a link to it. The scheme is a dark color set for the Maxscript Editor, drawing on the color and font settings the developer uses in other IDEs such as MonoDevelop, FlashDevelop, Eclipse and Visual Studio. If you'd rather change things, the color values live in MXS_EditorUser.properties as symbolic names you can edit.

Can I customize DarkScintilla's colors?

DarkScintilla stores nearly all of its color settings in MXS_EditorUser.properties using self-explaining symbolic color names, so you can make changes by editing those values directly. The developer welcomes improvements and tweaks and offers to integrate ones that are shared. Keep in mind there's no adapted html.properties included, so HTML file display within the Maxscript Editor isn't recolored by this scheme.

Is DarkScintilla free?

DarkScintilla is listed as free in this catalog. For current licensing details, check the developer's page. The download includes the scheme's properties files and a link to the Consolas font it uses, and from version 1.2 an installer script handles setup. It's confirmed here at version 1.2d, last updated in 2021. Remember to back up your original editor files before installing.
