Expert Curve Modeling earns a place in the superhive library for its curve-driven approach to Blender modeling, centered on Bézier curves and ECM objects. Note that it's a beta version, and some tools such as ECM segment splitting depend on the separate Curve Work add-on.
Expert Curve Modeling is a Blender add-on from Vovrzull built around Bézier curves, letting you create complex and flexible models. It's aimed at professionals looking to sharpen their 3D modeling, while beginners will need more time working through the developer's video tutorials. The add-on is currently a beta version.
Work happens across four modes — Vertex, Curve, Segment and Model — and the toolset spans grid resolution control, curve fill, extrude, bridge, merge, replace and duplicate. A Mesh to ECM conversion function turns mesh objects into ECM objects so they can be worked on within the add-on, and Point Deformation opens up manual manipulation of the ECM grid. Other functions include a Parallel Model System, curve and segment smoothing, Ngon segments, triangle and segment extrusion, and a Boolean operation.
Some functions have specific requirements: splitting ECM segments in half relies on the Curve Work add-on, and Point Deformation works only with ECM objects. Detailed function instructions and practical lessons are provided as video tutorials, with English and Japanese voiceover options, and a demo video is available.
Expert Curve Modeling is best for professionals looking to improve their 3D modeling with curve-based workflows in Blender. Beginners can use it too, but will need more time working through the developer's video tutorials.
Expert Curve Modeling is completely free to download and use.
Expert Curve Modeling relies on the Curve Work add-on for at least one function: splitting ECM segments in half. That split can be placed at a selected location in interactive mode, and it can be made either as loops or by breaking the connection with the other segment. If you plan to use segment splitting, install Curve Work alongside it. Other functions do not carry that stated requirement, but the developer's page and video tutorials are the place to confirm the full setup before you start.
Expert Curve Modeling is listed as free in this catalog, so there's no price figure to quote here. Licensing and any offers can change over time, so check the developer's page for the current terms before downloading. The developer also notes that returns of the add-on are only possible according to their Refund Policy, and asks that you watch the video carefully and contact the creator with any questions or doubts. Reviewing those details up front helps set expectations for a beta-stage tool.
Expert Curve Modeling includes a Mesh to ECM conversion function that transforms mesh objects into ECM objects, so you can then work with them inside the add-on. This conversion is covered in one of the developer's function tutorials, alongside practical lessons that pair it with tools like Replace, Merge and Rotate Curve. Keep in mind that some functions, such as Point Deformation, are built specifically for ECM objects, so converting your mesh first is what opens up that part of the workflow.
Expert Curve Modeling limits Point Deformation to ECM objects only, and the developer states plainly not to try it on other objects. Within ECM objects it opens a wide range of options for manually manipulating the ECM grid, up to creating completely different objects. If you want to use it on a standard mesh, run the Mesh to ECM conversion first to make it an ECM object. This behaviour is demonstrated in the add-on's function videos on the developer's page.
