Why we like it

Grab-it earns its place in the superhive library for reducing object attach-and-release animation to three clicks. Xane Studios cites handling a Rubik's cube, where each cube's parent changes during the animation, as one problem it solved in minutes.

What is Grab-It?

Grab-It, from Xane Studios, is a Blender addon built to help animators attach objects to other objects or characters and drop them during and/or after an animation. Before Grab-it, a simple grab animation meant working with fidgety constraints or duplicating the object and animating its visibility. This addon turns the process into three clicks.

The workflow runs on three actions: move to the point on the timeline where an object or bone should grab another object and press Grab, select the object and press Parent, then move to the drop point and press Drop. Bone Detection uses the last selected bone when you're in object or pose mode. Markers indicate where an object was picked up and dropped, and Clear options remove markers or all grab operations.

Grab-it works when rendering with motion blur and adds Start and End buttons to the timeline for setting the preview range. The 5kb add-on sits in the sidebar, and interactive tutorials are included in the package. It supports Blender 3.0 to 5.0 and is released under the GPL license.

Who is Grab-It best for?

Grab-It is best for animators building character interactions in Blender who need to attach and release objects across an animation.

How much does Grab-It cost?

Grab-It is completely free to download and use.
