Why we like it

Lazy Baker stands out in the superhive library for turning baking into a managed list, letting you queue collections, assign a bake type per item, and run everything in one batch. The mix of built-in and extra bake types, from Material ID to material override, keeps varied maps in a single workflow. A demo video is available.

What is Lazy Baker?

Lazy Baker is a Blender add-on from Bookyakuno that manages the list of data to be baked and bakes it all at once across various bake types. Collections are divided into groups and managed through a list menu, where each item can carry its own bake type, be baked individually, or batch-baked together with the rest of the list. If no list exists, it bakes the currently selected object. Fine-grained options include denoising and anti-aliasing.

Two bake modes are offered. Bake to Self works from the object's own information, while High to Low transfers data in a collection to a matching low-poly collection identified by the collection name plus the _low suffix. Beyond Blender's built-in bake types, you can select convex parts, positions, and multiple paths.

Additional bake types cover Pointiness for convex detail, Thickness using the AO node's Inner option, Material ID for random per-material colors, and material override for baking with a specified material. Base color, metallic, alpha, and named sockets from the Principled BSDF can also be baked. A Create Preview Object for Joining function lets you check baked images, and bake time and status are displayed.

Who is Lazy Baker best for?

Lazy Baker is best for blender artists baking texture maps who want to manage bake data as a list and batch-bake collections, including high-to-low workflows and detail maps such as Pointiness and Thickness.

How much does Lazy Baker cost?

Lazy Baker is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • List management for bake data, with a save destination file path, a per-item bake type, and collections added to a list menu
  • Batch bake all list items at once, or bake each item individually; with no list, the selected object is baked
  • Two bake modes: Bake to Self from the object's own information, and High to Low transferring collection data to a matching _low collection
  • Extra bake types including Pointiness for convex detail (with an option to increase contrast) and Thickness via the AO node's Inner option
  • Material ID bakes random colors per material name for masking, and material override swaps in a specified material before baking
  • Base color, metallic, alpha, and selectable named sockets from the Principled BSDF can be baked, with denoising and anti-aliasing options
  • Create Preview Object for Joining to check baked images, plus bake time and status readouts

Frequently asked questions

Does Lazy Baker support high-poly to low-poly baking?

Lazy Baker offers two bake modes for this. Bake to Self works from the object's own information, while High to Low transfers data in a collection to another low-poly collection. It finds the matching collection by looking for the collection name plus a special _low suffix, sets that as the collection to be baked, and bakes it. Because the add-on combines and renders all objects in a collection, objects within the same collection affect one another during the bake.

What bake types can Lazy Baker produce beyond Blender's built-in ones?

Lazy Baker adds several bake types beyond the ones built into Blender. You can bake convex parts through Pointiness, which emphasizes detail such as sculpt models, and Thickness, which uses the AO node's Inner option to bake the thinner parts of a mesh. Material ID bakes a random color per material name for masking, and material override replaces the target mesh's material with a specified one before baking. Base color, metallic, alpha, and named sockets from the Principled BSDF node can also be exported individually.

Can Lazy Baker bake individual items or the whole list at once?

Lazy Baker manages bake data through a list menu, where you add the collections you want to bake and set a bake type for each item. You can bake items one at a time or batch-bake every item in the list in one pass. If there is no list, it bakes the currently selected object instead. During a long bake Blender is inoperable until it finishes, so displaying the console window beforehand lets you follow the log and track bake time and status.

Is Lazy Baker free to use?

Lazy Baker is listed here as free. For current licensing and any terms, check the developer's page. The add-on is made by Bookyakuno, and documentation is available at bookyakuno.com. Once a bake is done, you can use Create Preview Object for Joining to check the baked image, and the time taken for baking along with various statuses is displayed, which can serve as an index when baking again.
