Stratus

Why we like it

Stratus works only with Blender 3.4 and 3.5, and relies on a deprecated part of the Blender API, so newer Blender versions may break it until a patch arrives.

What is Stratus?

Stratus is an HDRI sky creation tool for Blender, built by Jake Kurtz for producing realistic skies. It includes a viewport editor for creating and editing skies with real-time feedback, letting you generate a variety of sky environments. The cloud scapes you create can be animated.

Stratus uses rendering techniques similar to modern video games, so the skies render quickly. On an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070, the developer reports 8K renders taking anywhere between a couple of seconds and around fifteen, depending on settings. It is aimed at architectural visualization, product rendering, and animation work.

Be aware that Stratus depends on a part of the Blender API that has been deprecated, meaning future Blender updates could break it; the developer states a patch will follow when the needed tools become available. For this reason macOS compatibility is uncertain and not currently recommended. A dedicated GPU is strongly recommended, since integrated graphics run it slowly. Any future update, whether a patch or new features, is provided free.

Who is Stratus best for?

Stratus is best for blender artists working on architectural visualization, product rendering, and animation who need realistic, quick-rendering HDRI skies.

How much does Stratus cost?

Stratus is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

What Blender versions does Stratus support?

Stratus works only with Blender 3.4 and 3.5. It depends on a part of the Blender API that has since been deprecated, which means future Blender releases could possibly break the tool. The developer notes that the tools needed to fix this are reportedly in the works, and a patch will follow as soon as they become available. If you rely on a specific Blender version, confirm compatibility on the developer's page before installing, since ongoing support hinges on those upcoming API changes.

Does Stratus run on macOS?

Stratus may or may not run on macOS. Because it depends on a part of the Blender API that has been deprecated, the developer cannot recommend it for macOS at this time, and states this will remain the case until Blender is updated with the right tools. If you work on a Mac, treat macOS support as uncertain and check the developer's page for the current status before purchasing, rather than assuming it will function reliably in your setup.

Does Stratus need a dedicated GPU?

Stratus is capable of running on integrated graphics cards, but the developer describes that as very slow and not a great experience, and strongly recommends having a dedicated GPU. As a performance reference, the developer reports rendering in 8K anywhere between roughly a couple of seconds and around fifteen seconds on an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070, depending on settings. For comfortable use and the fast render times Stratus is designed for, a dedicated GPU is advised.

Is Stratus free, and are updates included?

Stratus is listed as free in this catalog; for current licensing and pricing, check the developer's page. It is distributed under the GPL license. The developer states that any future update, whether a patch, new features, or otherwise, will be provided at no additional cost. That covers the patch planned for the deprecated Blender API dependency as well as any later feature additions, so updates are part of the package once you have the tool.
