Earns its place for pairing a free, open-source license with a long, actively maintained changelog, and for its manual-profile approach to lighting rather than template-based HDR setups.
LeoMoon LightStudio, formerly Blender Light Studio, is a free and open-source lighting system for Blender. It lets you add and remove lights around objects, build multiple light profiles, and switch between them with a single click. The product page raises funds to fix bugs, improve the interface and add features, while the plugin itself stays free to download and use.
Each light carries many options through the Light Node, and every option can be animated. Lights can use different light textures, and 15 realistic HDR light textures come included. The LightStudio Control Panel handles 2D manipulation that translates to 3D positioning; you double-click to toggle a light and right-click to isolate it. Lights can be assigned to different render layers, and light profiles can be imported and exported between projects.
It supports both Cycles and EEVEE through a switch button, added EEVEE Next support for Blender 4.2.x, and can export lights as EXR for use in other 3D programs. The developer frames it as manual lighting for product renders, favouring custom profiles over fixed HDR templates. A demo video is available.
Leomoon Lightstudio is best for blender artists setting up custom lighting, particularly product renders where control over individual lights matters more than fixed HDR templates.
Leomoon Lightstudio is completely free to download and use.
LeoMoon LightStudio covers a wide span of Blender releases. The introduction lists Blender 2.8x, 2.9x, 3.0, 3.1 and 3.2, and later updates extend that reach — the changelog records Blender 4 support, backward compatibility for Blender 3.2 and later, Blender 4.4 support, and a port to the Blender 5.1+ modern extension format. If you run a recent build, check the developer's page to confirm your exact version is covered before installing it.
LeoMoon LightStudio works with both Cycles and EEVEE. A Cycles|EEVEE switch button was added so you can move between the two render engines, and a later update added EEVEE (EEVEE Next) support for Blender 4.2.x. It also reports the fastest render update while lighting, so adjustments show as you work. For engine-specific behaviour on your Blender version, the developer's page is the place to confirm current details.
LeoMoon LightStudio, formerly known as Blender Light Studio, is listed as free here, and the developer describes it as 100% free and open-source, downloadable and usable without limitations. The product page exists to raise funds toward fixing bugs, improving the interface and adding features, so buying it supports development rather than unlocking the plugin. For current licensing and how to contribute, check the developer's page directly.
LeoMoon LightStudio lets you import and export light profiles, so a setup built in one project can be carried into another. You can add multiple light profiles, switch between them with a single click, and profile export/import now preserves hidden lights. The developer positions this as an alternative to template-based background HDR plugins, letting you build and reuse your own custom profiles instead. See the developer's page for details on the import and export workflow.
LeoMoon LightStudio includes macOS Metal support, which was added in the 2.14.0 update, so Mac users on Metal-based systems are covered alongside other platforms. Beyond that, the plugin ships 15 realistic HDR light textures and allows each light to use a different texture. For confirmation that your specific macOS and Blender combination is supported, the developer's page lists current compatibility details.
