Mat Assign earns its place in the superhive library for keeping material copy-and-paste inside the 3D Viewport, under the cursor, without requiring object selection first.
Mat Assign is a Blender add-on that copies and pastes materials directly in the 3D Viewport, right under the mouse cursor. Hover over a mesh and press a hotkey to copy with left-click or paste with right-click, with no prior object selection required.
When an object has no materials, Mat Assign automatically creates a new Principled BSDF while preserving its original viewport color. A UI panel adds one-click color sync, pushing or pulling colors between Viewport Display and Shader Base Color. Custom hotkeys let you change the modifier key through an interactive Capture Key feature, and the default workflow uses Shift with left-click to copy and right-click to paste.
Mat Assign is compatible with Blender 4.2 through 5.1 and works across the Blender-Internal, Cycles, and Eevee render engines. It installs as an add-on, ships with documentation, and is distributed under the GPL license. A demo video is available.
Mat Assign is best for blender artists copying and assigning materials directly in the viewport during scene layout.
Mat Assign is completely free to download and use.
Mat Assign supports Blender versions 4.2 through 5.1 and is marked Blender Extension compatible. It installs as an add-on and works with the Blender-Internal, Cycles, and Eevee render engines, so it fits a range of Blender setups. That version span covers current Blender releases for its viewport material copy-and-paste. The add-on is distributed under the GPL license. For the latest version details and any newer compatibility, check the developer's page before installing.
Mat Assign works directly in the 3D Viewport, under your mouse cursor. Hold Shift, or your custom modifier key, then left-click over any mesh to copy its material and right-click over a mesh to paste. No prior object selection is required, since the tool acts on whatever mesh sits under the cursor. If an object has no materials, Mat Assign automatically creates a new Principled BSDF while preserving its original viewport color.
Mat Assign lets you change the modifier key through its interactive Capture Key feature, so you are not locked to the default. By default you hold Shift and left-click to copy or right-click to paste over a mesh, and you can swap the modifier from the UI. The UI panel also handles color sync, pushing or pulling colors between Viewport Display and Shader Base Color with one click.
Mat Assign is listed as free here. Licensing terms can change over time, so check the developer's page for current pricing and license details before downloading. The add-on itself is distributed under the GPL license. It comes with documentation, and a demo video is available. For the most accurate and up-to-date terms, the developer's page is the best place to confirm what applies to you.
