Why we like it

MatStudio earns its place in the superhive library for pairing Asset browser preview generation with configurable studio lighting and support for both Cycles and Octane.

What is Matstudio?

MatStudio is a Blender add-on from PLASTIK MACHINE that generates and assigns custom material previews directly inside the Asset browser. To use it, mark the materials you want previews for as assets and select them in the Asset browser. You then choose a target object, camera and world environment, which lets you produce endless variations of each preview.

The add-on lets you customize preview resolution and set a custom output folder for saved previews, with quick access to that folder built in. When no folder is set, previews are stored in a //material_previews folder beside the .blend file. If a material doesn't look right, you can modify it and render a new preview. MatStudio is compatible with both Cycles and Octane Render.

Its Studio Lighting feature renders previews with any studio lighting setup, including real lights, backdrops or additional geometry. Place the setup in a collection, select it from the Studio dropdown, and MatStudio renders every object in that collection; choosing None skips studio lighting. The add-on is licensed under GNU GPL 3.0.

Frequently asked questions

Does MatStudio work with Blender 4.4?

MatStudio has been tested and works with Blender 4.4.0, according to the developer; other versions haven't been tested. The listing also indicates Blender version support from 4.4 through 5.0. It installs as a Blender add-on and appears in the Asset browser once enabled. If you run a different Blender release, check the developer's page for the latest compatibility details before relying on it in production work.

Does MatStudio support Octane Render?

MatStudio is compatible with both Cycles and Octane Render, so you can generate and assign material previews using either engine. Beyond the render engine, you can customize the target object, camera, world environment and preview resolution to create different variations of a preview. If you don't like how a material looks, you can modify it and render a fresh preview. For engine-specific setup, refer to the developer's documentation.

How do I install MatStudio in Blender?

MatStudio installs from the downloaded .zip file. Open Blender's Preferences, go to the Add-ons tab and choose Install from Disk, then point it at the zip. Once enabled, the add-on becomes visible in the Asset browser, where it generates and assigns previews for materials you've marked as assets. The developer suggests saving a startup file containing your target objects, cameras, world environments and studio lights to speed up future preview rendering.

Where does MatStudio save material previews?

MatStudio lets you set a custom output folder for your rendered previews and gives you quick access to it. If no output folder is set, previews are saved to a //material_previews folder located where the .blend file lives. This keeps generated thumbnails alongside your project by default while still allowing a custom destination. Materials need to be marked as assets and selected in the Asset browser for previews to generate.

Is MatStudio free?

MatStudio is listed as free here in our catalog. It's distributed under the GNU GPL 3.0 license, and the current version is 1.0.0. For the most up-to-date licensing terms and any purchase details, check the developer's page directly. The add-on ships with no bundled .blend files; the assets shown in its demo video are free downloads sourced separately, as noted on the developer's page.
