Mesh Trails earns its place in the superhive library as a mesh-based trail generator that plugs into Blender's shader, modifier, and Geometry Nodes systems. Built by DillonGoo Studios over two years for stylized and non-stylized VFX, it favors an automated, real-time workflow over manual keyframe offsetting.
Mesh Trails is a Blender add-on that automatically generates clean, fully customizable, mesh-based trails at the click of a button. Instead of particles or curves, it builds a UV unwrapped mesh, so you can apply custom shaders to reach the look you want. The trail is driven by any Bezier or Poly curve, including cyclic curves, and that emitter can be parented, animated, or rigged with hook modifiers to morph with a character or prop.
Because the output is mesh based, it also works with Blender's modifier stack and Geometry Nodes. A realtime preview lets you drag the cursor and watch the trails move in real time, and the add-on now includes Alembic export support.
Mesh Trails has been in development for over two years by DillonGoo Studios, with a focus on integrating into studio pipelines for stylized or non-stylized VFX. It is compatible with Blender 2.9+, 3+, and 4+, and the 2026 update added bug fixes plus 5.0 support. The package ships with 8 demo files with shaders and geometry node setups, a tutorial video, and tool support.
Mesh Trails is best for blender artists adding automated, mesh-based VFX trails to animation, including stylized or NPR work.
Mesh Trails is completely free to download and use.
Mesh Trails is compatible with Blender 2.9+, 3+, and 4+, and its 2026 update added bug fixes together with 5.0 support. It runs on Windows, MacOS, or Linux. All future updates are included, so access to new features comes with the add-on. The package ships with the installation file, so you can add it to a supported Blender build and start generating trails. For the current list of supported builds, check the developer's page.
Mesh Trails can use any Bezier or Poly curve as the emitter for a trail, including cyclic curves. That curve can be parented, animated, or rigged using hook modifiers, which makes for a fully animatable emitter able to morph based on character or prop deformation, whatever its shape, size, or movement. This curve-driven approach is what feeds the generated trail, and it works alongside Blender's animation tools rather than requiring manual keyframe offsetting.
Mesh Trails generates a UV unwrapped mesh rather than using particles or curves, which lets you apply custom shaders to reach a desired look. Because the result is mesh based, it also works with Blender's modifier stack and with Geometry Nodes, adding extra complexity to the trail. The package includes 8 demo files with shaders and geometry node setups, plus a tutorial video to help you get started with these systems at your own level of expertise.
Mesh Trails now includes Alembic export support. The add-on has been in development for over two years by DillonGoo Studios, with a focus on integrating into studio pipelines for stylized or non-stylized VFX. Because the trails are generated as a mesh, they carry through Blender's mesh-based systems. For questions about export or pipeline use, the developer lists a support contact on their page.
Mesh Trails is listed as free in this catalog, and all future updates are included with it. We don't publish specific pricing or licensing terms here, so check the developer's page for current details. The package includes the installation file, 8 demo files with shaders and geometry node setups, a tutorial video, and tool support, and it works on Windows, MacOS, or Linux.
