Node Differ earns its place for turning node comparison into a visual diff, with version control built into Snapshot mode. Version 3.0 added rename-proof UUID tracking and detection for renamed nodes.
Node Differ is a structural comparison engine for Blender that shows what changed between node setups. Point it at an external .blend file, an auto-detected older version, or your local project history, and it compares every node, property, and connection to your active group. It works across Geometry Nodes, Shader Nodes, and Compositor Nodes in Blender 4.5 and higher.
Three comparison modes cover different workflows: Snapshot mode uses built-in project history, Version mode auto-matches iteratively saved files such as _v01 and _v02, and Manual mode lets you pick any external .blend file. Snapshot mode also acts as version control, letting you commit hidden snapshots with a custom message, revert your active tree to a previous snapshot, and delete unwanted commits.
Changes appear as colour-coded highlights in the editor, covering added, modified, impacted, muted, removed, and renamed nodes. Deep data tracking catches shifts in float curves, vector mapping, color ramps, and interpolation modes, while ghost nodes leave markers showing the old connections and locations of deleted data. The N-Panel reports which inputs, outputs, and data shifted.
Node Differ is best for blender artists working with complex Geometry Nodes, Shader, or Compositor trees who need to find exactly what changed between versions of a node setup.
Node Differ is completely free to download and use.
Node Differ supports Blender 4.5 and higher, and works across Geometry Nodes, Shader Nodes, and Compositor Nodes. Its structural comparison covers every node, property, and connection between your active group and a chosen reference, whether that reference comes from a snapshot, an auto-detected earlier version, or an external .blend file. Deep data tracking extends to float curves, vector mapping, color ramps, and interpolation modes, so changes inside those node types show up too.
Node Differ installs like a standard Blender add-on. Go to Edit, then Preferences, then Add-ons, and choose Install. Select the downloaded ZIP file and click Enable. Once active, open the Node Differ panel, pick a comparison mode and reference, select the active node group you want to compare, and click Compare Nodes. Highlights then appear in the editor, and the N-Panel breaks down which inputs, outputs, and data shifted.
Node Differ can be used in any of your projects, non-commercial or commercial, according to its license. You may not redistribute the geometry node group itself, whether for free or commercially. It is listed here as free, so check the developer's page for the latest licensing terms. Support is offered through the developer's Discord, Twitter, and Instagram channels. A demo video is also available.
Node Differ offers three comparison modes to match different pipelines. Snapshot mode uses built-in project history and doubles as version control, letting you commit hidden snapshots with a custom message, revert to a previous snapshot, and delete old commits. Version mode automatically matches iteratively saved files such as _v01 and _v02. Manual mode lets you browse to any external .blend file and pick a reference node group. Version 3.0 also added rename-proof tracking using hidden UUIDs, so history stays linked even when node groups are renamed.
