Why we like it

PBR Lookdev earns its place in the Blender extensions library for automating shader-network setup. Point it at a Substance Painter export folder, scan to auto-assign maps, and build a structured PBR node tree, then refine layers, masks and colour non-destructively from a single panel.

What is PBR Lookdev?

PBR Lookdev is a Blender add-on by BHiMAX for building layered PBR materials from textures exported out of Substance Painter and Designer. It automatically creates a structured PBR node setup, replacing the manual work of importing textures, wiring nodes, fixing colour space and adding adjustments by hand. The add-on is aimed at texture artists exporting PBR sets and at lookdev and lighting artists handling asset presentation, cinematic shots and portfolio renders.

The workflow runs from a single panel: create a new PBR material, add a layer, point it at your exported texture folder, then scan to auto-assign the detected maps. A build step generates the full node setup, after which you can adjust colours, roughness, metallic, masks, overlays and blend modes non-destructively.

It supports five shader types (Principled BSDF, Glass, Emission, Diffuse and Subsurface Scattering) along with procedural and image masks, per-channel overlays with blend modes, per-slot colour correction, UDIM tile sequences and ORM/ARM packed textures with a selectable channel layout. It runs on Blender 4.2 LTS and newer under the GPL-3.0-or-later license.

Who is PBR Lookdev best for?

PBR Lookdev is best for texture artists exporting PBR sets from Substance Painter, and lookdev and lighting artists building materials for asset presentation, cinematic shots and portfolio renders in Blender.

How much does PBR Lookdev cost?

PBR Lookdev is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Layered PBR shader system that stacks multiple shader layers with blend and mask controls
  • Support for five shader types: Principled BSDF, Glass, Emission, Diffuse and Subsurface Scattering
  • Auto folder scan that detects and assigns texture maps by filename keywords, with batch scanning of subfolders to create one layer per texture set
  • Smart part detection that identifies character or prop part names such as Hair, Body and Face from mixed folders and filters the scan per part
  • Procedural masks (Noise, Wave, Gradient, Voronoi) plus image masks with invert, min/max range and independent tiling
  • Per-channel image overlays with blend modes, strength and stacked compositing, plus per-slot colour correction for hue, saturation, value, contrast and gamma
  • UDIM tile sequence support and ORM/ARM packed texture support with a selectable channel layout

Frequently asked questions

Does PBR Lookdev work with Blender 4.2?

PBR Lookdev supports Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so it runs on 4.2 and later releases. The current build is version 4.2.1, published in March 2026. Blender versions below 4.2 are not listed as compatible. The add-on installs through Blender's Extensions system or from disk, and it requests a Files permission for texture path scanning and image loading, which it uses to detect and load your maps. If you run a supported release, you can drag the downloaded add-on into Blender or install the .zip from Preferences.

How do I install PBR Lookdev in Blender?

PBR Lookdev installs from a .zip file. Download the latest release, then in Blender open Edit, Preferences, Add-ons, Install, select the downloaded .zip and enable PBR Lookdev in the list. It can also be added by dragging and dropping the file into Blender. Once enabled, its panels appear in the Shader Editor N-Panel, the 3D Viewport N-Panel and under Properties, Material. The add-on requests a Files permission so it can scan texture paths and load images during setup.

Is PBR Lookdev free to use?

PBR Lookdev is listed as free here and is released as open-source software under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. That license lets you use, study, modify and redistribute the add-on under its terms. For the full license text and any current details, check the developer's page and the LICENSE file in the project repository. Because it is GPL-3.0-or-later, the source is available alongside the packaged add-on, so you can review how the shader setup is built before enabling it.

What shader types does PBR Lookdev support?

PBR Lookdev supports five shader types: Principled BSDF, Glass, Emission, Diffuse and Subsurface Scattering. Each material is built as a layered system, so you can stack multiple shader layers and combine them with blend and mask controls. Alongside the shader types, it handles procedural masks, image overlays with blend modes, per-slot colour correction, UDIM tile sequences and ORM/ARM packed textures. This range lets you assemble and adjust a full PBR material from the add-on's panel rather than wiring the nodes manually.

Where does PBR Lookdev appear in Blender's interface?

PBR Lookdev adds panels in three places: the Shader Editor N-Panel, the 3D Viewport N-Panel and under Properties, Material. From these panels you create a new PBR material, add layers, select an exported texture folder, scan to auto-detect maps and build the node setup. You can then adjust colours, roughness, metallic, masks, overlays and blend modes, along with min/max range controls and colour correction. A compact mode and a detail view toggle streamline the interface when you need fewer options on screen.
