Rhubarb Lipsync NG connects the Rhubarb Lip Sync engine to Blender, giving animators an interface for generating automated lip-sync animations from audio files and applying them to character models. It's a rework of the established add-on, built around simplicity and ease of use while aiming for good results with reasonable effort.
The add-on maps sound to animation through several methods, including shape keys, armature bones, and action sheets. Basic animations need only 5-8 shapes plus one idle, following the classic Hanna-Barbera chart. It can map and bake multiple objects at once, which helps with characters that have separate parts such as tongues or teeth, and it supports 3D animation using strip blending as well as 2D animation without blending.
Animations can be baked to NLA tracks and strips for later tweaking, then converted to a single action using Blender's built-in baking tools. An inbuilt converter uses Blender's own converter to prepare sound files in the format the Rhubarb engine expects. The interface adds cue and action previews, validations, a result report, and background processing with progress indicators.
