Why we like it

Built by a rigger with a Softimage background, Schematic Editor sets out to close the gap in visual clarity for Blender rigging by bringing a node-based schematic view into the app.

What is Schematic Editor?

Schematic Editor is a Blender add-on for viewing and editing rig structure as a node graph. Parenting and constraint relationships appear as connected nodes, so you can read a hierarchy without opening one Outliner level after another.

You connect objects, bones and constraints with node links, and can parent objects directly to bones. Constraints including Child Of, Copy Rotation, IK and Pole Vector can be created directly in the schematic, with a dropdown for choosing from all available constraint types. A side panel exposes constraint parameters and lets you add new constraint sockets or remove empty ones, and multiple constraints are supported per node. Collections show up as framed groups, and collection colors appear as colored frames.

Auto-Sync reflects schematic edits live in the 3D scene. Selection shortcuts help when navigating large rigs: L selects the parent, Shift+L the direct children, and Ctrl+L the full parent-child chain. The view is inspired by the schematic view in Softimage.

Who is Schematic Editor best for?

Schematic Editor is best for blender riggers who want to see and edit parenting and constraint hierarchies as a visual node graph rather than through the Outliner.

How much does Schematic Editor cost?

Schematic Editor is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Node-based schematic view of parenting and constraint relationships, with no Outliner foldouts to click through
  • Connect objects, bones and constraints with node links, including parenting objects directly to bones
  • Create Child Of, Copy Rotation, IK and Pole Vector constraints in the schematic, with a dropdown for all available constraint types
  • Side panel to edit constraint parameters, add constraint sockets or remove empty ones, with multiple constraints per node
  • Collections displayed as framed groups, with collection colors shown as colored frames; Alt+P unparents a node so it can be dragged into another frame
  • Auto-Sync reflects schematic edits live in the 3D scene
  • Selection shortcuts: L for the parent, Shift+L for direct children, Ctrl+L for the full hierarchy

Frequently asked questions

Does Schematic Editor work with Blender 5.1?

Schematic Editor is listed as compatible with Blender 5.1 at version 1.6.7. The add-on works inside Blender, presenting parenting and constraint relationships as a node graph similar to the layout used for Shader and Geometry Nodes. For older Blender releases or details on other supported versions, check the developer's page, since the compatibility noted here refers to the current release.

Which constraints can I create in Schematic Editor?

Schematic Editor lets you create Child Of, Copy Rotation, IK and Pole Vector constraints directly in the schematic, and a dropdown menu lets you choose from all available constraint types. Multiple constraints are supported per node for both objects and bones. A side panel lets you edit constraint parameters, add new constraint sockets or remove empty ones. If you pick a different constraint in the dropdown and sync, the new constraint is renamed in the scene.

How do I move a node between collections in Schematic Editor?

Schematic Editor shows collections as framed groups, meaning each collection appears as a labeled box containing its nodes. To move a node, press Alt+P to unparent it from its current collection frame, then drag it into another frame to assign it there. After syncing, the object is moved to the new collection in the Blender scene. Collection colors from your scene are also displayed as colored frames in the schematic.

Is Schematic Editor free?

Schematic Editor is listed as free in this catalog. The add-on is described as a work in progress that is growing, with the developer welcoming feature requests to shape the roadmap. For current licensing terms, download details and any changes to how it is distributed, refer to the developer's page rather than relying on the status shown here, since licensing can change over time.
