Smart Group earns a place in the Superhive library for tackling a specific Blender limitation: collection instances can't take modifiers without being made real, whereas Smart Group accepts modifiers directly on a group.
Smart Group is a Blender addon for combining multiple objects into a single group, making it easier to manage items in a scene. Unlike Blender's collection instances, which don't accept modifiers and require making the instance real before editing, Smart Group lets you add all kinds of modifiers, including geometry node modifiers, directly to a group — useful for non-destructive workflows. You can also override the group's material.
Groups are handled through a pie menu (default shortcut Ctrl + G) or the N panel. Operations include creating, dissolving, deleting, duplicating and applying groups, plus adding a selection to an active group. An edit mode lets you edit group members, add or remove members, and control display with hide/show, wireframe, wire/solid and transparency options. A Fix Group operator addresses shading issues when objects lack UV maps, and bounds display can be toggled and configured in the N panel.
Recent updates added group origin positioning, orientation alignment to the active object, editing in local view, customizable edit mode bounding boxes, linked duplicate groups and group instances. Documentation and an FAQ are provided by the developer.
Smart Group - Adding Modifiers To Group Is Supported is best for blender users managing multi-object scenes who want non-destructive grouping with modifier and material control.
Smart Group - Adding Modifiers To Group Is Supported is completely free to download and use.
Smart Group is used through a pie menu or the N panel, with a default pie menu shortcut of Ctrl + G. From there you can create a group from selected objects, dissolve or delete groups, duplicate them, add a selection to the active group, and apply groups into a single object. An edit mode, reachable with the Tab shortcut, lets you edit group members directly. Duplicating groups uses the same constraint and snap shortcuts as copying in Blender, including X, Y and Z for axis constraints and Ctrl or B for snapping.
Smart Group lets you add all kinds of modifiers to a group, including geometry node modifiers. This addresses a limitation with Blender collection instances, where you can't add modifiers to a collection instance and have to make the instance real to edit it. With Smart Group, you can also override the group's material. Note that usual modifiers won't work on instances, though geometry node modifiers still work on them, and you can change a member's instance type if a procedural material doesn't render correctly.
Smart Group is listed as free in this catalog. Pricing and licensing can change over time, so check the developer's page for the current terms before downloading. The addon is made by Darth Mickey, who also provides documentation and an FAQ covering how the tools work, and invites feedback or questions directly. Reviewing that material is a good way to confirm the latest details on availability and support alongside the current licensing information.
Smart Group's August 8, 2025 update (v0.2.1) added the ability to place newly created groups in a collection called "group", an option to display bounds only when a group is selected, a Tab shortcut for editing a group, linked duplicate groups whose members share the same mesh data, and group instances. Earlier updates introduced group origin positioning, orientation alignment to the active object, editing directly in local view, viewport overlay checkboxes for bounding boxes, and a customizable edit mode bounding box with adjustable color and line width.
