Why we like it

Torch stands out in the Superhive library for handling light adjustment through an on-screen gizmo and icons rather than property panels alone.

What is Torch?

Torch is a Blender add-on that makes controlling lights easier directly in the 3D viewport. When you create or select one or more lights, a dedicated icon appears in the view area, and each created light keeps an icon at the bottom left of the screen for turning it on and off and adjusting it.

The add-on lets you change a light's position relative to the model for intuitive operation. To adjust the distance of the light to the surface, hold CTRL and drag the gizmo left or right. Torch supports a normal mode and a reflection mode; you switch between them by holding SHIFT while dragging the gizmo, and you can flip the direction by holding ALT. Intensity, color, type and other registered properties can be changed from the Torch UI shown in the 3D view.

The full version adds bookmark, select, mute and solo light functions. Torch is a Dev Fund contributor and ships under a royalty-free license. Documentation is provided, and a demo video is available.

Frequently asked questions

Which Blender versions does Torch support?

Torch lists support for Blender 2.83, 2.9, 2.91, 2.92, 2.93 and 3.0. If you are running one of these versions, the add-on is documented as compatible. For newer Blender releases not named here, check the developer's page before relying on it, since the listed range does not extend beyond those versions. The add-on was published over four years ago, so confirming current compatibility on timo.ink is a sensible step.

How do you adjust the distance of a light with Torch?

Torch lets you adjust the distance of a light to the surface by holding the CTRL key and dragging the gizmo left or right. You can also switch between normal mode and reflection mode by holding SHIFT while dragging the gizmo, and flip the light's direction by holding ALT. These interactions happen directly in the 3D view, alongside the on-screen icon that lets you turn a light on and off.

What extra functions are in the full version of Torch?

Torch's full version adds bookmark, select, mute and solo light functions on top of the interactive controls. The base interactive lighting features let you position lights, adjust intensity, color and type, and switch between normal and reflection modes. For the specifics of what each function does and how the versions differ, refer to the developer's page and the included documentation.

Is Torch free, and what license does it use?

Torch is listed as free in this catalog, and it ships under a royalty-free license according to its details. The developer, timo.ink, is also noted as a Dev Fund contributor. Licensing terms and any version differences can change over time, so check the developer's page on Superhive for the current details before you download or rely on it in a project.
