What is Tracking Toolkit?

Tracking Toolkit connects OpenXR trackers and devices directly to Blender, letting you view and record their motion in your scene. It supports camera and object tracking, and can also track the movement of actors for motion capture. Recorded takes integrate with the NLA system, and action names are written as SMPTE timecodes.

After connecting to your OpenXR runtime through the "Track TK" sidebar tab, detected controllers and trackers populate a list. Pressing Create References adds them to the scene as bones or, optionally, empties. Each tracker gets a tracking point that follows its exact location and holds keyframe data, plus a child offset point used for tweaking or aligning, which objects and cameras can be constrained to. Recording captures tracker positions at your scene's FPS by default, with an override available in the add-on preferences.

Runtimes such as SteamVR, Meta Link, VDXR and Monado are supported, covering devices including the Valve Index, HTC VIVE, Meta Quest 3 and Vive Focus. Vive Trackers require SteamVR as the OpenXR runtime, with a role assigned to each tracker. Tracking Toolkit will always remain free and is licensed under GPL 3.0 or later.

Does Tracking Toolkit work with Blender 5.0?

Tracking Toolkit works with Blender 5.0 and later. Beyond Blender itself, you will also need an OpenXR runtime and a device to go with it. Supported runtimes include SteamVR, Meta Link, VDXR and Monado, covering devices such as the Valve Index, HTC VIVE, Meta Quest 3, Oculus Rift and Vive Focus. Note that some runtimes do not support OpenGL as Blender's Display Graphics Backend. The listing shows Windows as a supported platform for version 2.0.3.

How do I install Tracking Toolkit in Blender?

Tracking Toolkit is installed from disk. Download the latest release zip, then open Blender and go to Edit > Preferences > Get Extensions, use the arrow in the top right corner, choose Install from disk, and select the downloaded zip. You can also drag and drop the add-on into Blender. Once installed, navigate to the new "Track TK" tab on the sidebar and press the Start/Connect OpenXR button to establish a connection to your runtime.

Can I use Vive Trackers without a headset in Tracking Toolkit?

Tracking Toolkit lets you use Vive Trackers without a headset. Make sure to disable Pause VR when headset is idle in the SteamVR video settings. If you have no headset attached at all, you may need to enable the Mock HMD driver. Note that when using Vive Trackers you must use SteamVR as your OpenXR runtime, and you will need to assign a role to each tracker, such as waist or foot, in the SteamVR tracker settings.

How many trackers does Tracking Toolkit need?

Tracking Toolkit only needs one tracker to get started, but you will need more for tasks like full-body motion capture. When new trackers are detected they appear on the tracker list, and pressing Create References adds them to the scene. Even if controllers are disconnected they remain on the list, and you can use the eyeball icon to show or hide trackers in the viewport. Double-clicking a tracker's name lets you give it a nickname.

Is Tracking Toolkit free to use?

Tracking Toolkit is listed as free here, and the developer states it will always remain free, with contributions welcome via Ko-fi and Patreon. It is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. Files under the images and assets folders are in the Public Domain (CC0), while branding files are public domain but with trademark rights reserved.
