Why we like it

Vertex Group Collections earns its place for closing a gap in native Blender, giving vertex groups a folder-and-subfolder layout the default interface leaves out.

What is Vertex Group Collections?

Natively, Blender keeps vertex groups in a single list with no folders. Vertex Group Collections adds that missing folder structure, letting you rename groups and set which vertex groups go in which folder, with subfolders available for further tidiness and full control over how the list is arranged.

The addon has been stress tested up to 1000 vertex groups on a single model, the point where performance can degrade significantly, though reaching even half that count is unlikely in most projects. Documentation is included, and the addon works across Blender versions 2.83 through 5.0 under a GPL license.

A demo video is available. Shape Key Collections, a separate addon, also brings a folder structure, in that case for shape keys. Both cover different data, vertex groups here, shape keys there.

Who is Vertex Group Collections best for?

Vertex Group Collections is best for blender users managing large or cluttered lists of vertex groups on a model.

How much does Vertex Group Collections cost?

Vertex Group Collections is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Vertex Group Collections work with Blender 5.0?

Vertex Group Collections lists compatibility with Blender versions 2.83 through 5.0, covering a wide span from older builds to current releases. If you're running a version inside that range, the addon's folder-based organization for vertex groups should be available to you. For versions outside that range, or to confirm behaviour on a specific build, check the developer's page. The broad version support means the addon isn't tied to a single Blender release cycle, so it stays usable across upgrades within that window.

How many vertex groups can Vertex Group Collections handle?

Vertex Group Collections has been stress tested up to 1000 vertex groups on a single model, and at that point performance can degrade significantly. The developer notes it's doubtful most projects would reach even half that number, so typical use with far smaller counts stays well within comfortable territory. If your models carry unusually large vertex group counts, this ceiling is worth keeping in mind, but for ordinary work it's unlikely to be a limiting factor for most Blender users.

What license is Vertex Group Collections released under?

Vertex Group Collections is released under the GPL license. That license covers how the addon's code can be used, modified and redistributed, setting the terms for anyone working with or building on it. Documentation is also included with the addon. For the full terms and any specific details about redistribution or modification, the developer's page and the accompanying license text are the places to look for the authoritative wording, since those carry the exact conditions rather than a summary.

Is Vertex Group Collections free?

Vertex Group Collections is listed as free here in the catalog. Licensing and availability can change over time, so for the current terms and to download the addon, head to the developer's page. The addon itself is released under the GPL license, which governs use, modification and redistribution. For the most up-to-date details on availability and any conditions attached, the developer's page is the authoritative source to check before you install.
