Why we like it

Advanced Sculpting was developed with help from Dimitris Chloupis's Blender-Python library Morpheas and ideas contributed by Kostas Nikolopoulos. The add-on was renamed because the previous name confused some users.

What is Advanced Sculpting?

Advanced Sculpting is an add-on for Blender that changes the way you sculpt by adding brush categories, texture folders and a custom UI that is both simple yet complete. Brush categories let you group your brushes together and navigate through them easily, which helps when you collect or make more brushes than you can handle. Note that brushes are not included — this is an add-on, not a brush set.

Texture folders let you select a brush, choose a texture folder and hit "Get Textures" to open a custom dialog containing only those textures, rather than adding each one individually in Blender. The UI follows a minimalist philosophy: rarely used settings are hidden but quick to access, brush navigation is kept easy, and emphasis is placed on the sculpted mesh.

The add-on's UI is organized into three parts — Control Panel, Brushes Panel and Widget — which can be turned on and off separately. The Control Panel and Brushes Panel can be locked in place or moved around freely. UI colors can be changed from the control panel, stored per file. Brush categories can be imported from .blend files and re-import themselves on reopening Blender.

  • Right-click the basic settings button to flip brush direction (Add becomes Subtract, Flatten becomes Contrast)

Frequently asked questions

Does Advanced Sculpting include the brushes shown in its previews?

Advanced Sculpting is an add-on, not a brush set, so the brushes shown in previews are not included. The add-on provides the brush categories system that lets you group and navigate your own brushes into a list, along with texture folders and a custom UI. You can add any brush you want to a category, use the name sample to add many brushes at once, and import brush categories organized inside .blend files. Those imported categories re-import themselves the next time you close and reopen Blender, unless you remove them.

How do texture folders work in Advanced Sculpting?

Advanced Sculpting adds texture folders so you can use a set of textures without making a new brush for each one. You select the brush you want, choose the texture folder, and hit "Get Textures". This opens a custom dialog containing only those textures, which is easier to handle than navigating dozens of textures already loaded in your project. This approach saves adding each texture into Blender individually, which the developer notes is time consuming.

Can I customize the Advanced Sculpting interface layout?

Advanced Sculpting organizes its interface into three parts: the Control Panel, the Brushes Panel and the Widget, each of which can be turned on and off separately. The Control Panel and Brushes Panel can be locked in place or moved around freely as you wish. You can also change the UI's colors from the control panel; this setting is not global but stored in the file, so to always use a specific color you would need to alter your start-up file. The add-on works with region overlap as well.

Is Advanced Sculpting free to use?

Advanced Sculpting is listed as free in this catalog. For current licensing details, the developer's page is the best place to confirm. For feedback, bug reports or feature requests, the developer points users to the Blender Artists page or direct email. A demo video is also available if you want to see the add-on before installing it into your Blender sculpting workflow.
