Earns its place in the Blender extensions library as a batch material tool built by a Lead Technical Material Artist at KitBash3D, shaped by real production needs when moving Maya material workflows into Blender.
[BAM] AutoMat is a Blender add-on from AlexeyHRDesign built for batch setup and updating of materials. It creates materials directly from a texture folder and lets you manage them through a Material Manager aimed at production-scale workflows, so hundreds of materials can be set up in one click from a texture library.
The add-on reads subfolders and custom texture suffixes, handles color spaces automatically, and supports both OpenGL and DirectX normal maps. A preset system keeps material setups consistent, while channel selection covers plug-in or packed textures. It reuses existing texture data-blocks to avoid unnecessary duplicates and identifies materials based on the presence of a Base Color texture.
BAM grew out of Maya-inspired workflows that its developer, a Lead Technical Material Artist at KitBash3D, needed to bring into Blender without sacrificing speed, consistency, or control. It's geared toward artists creating many materials in Substance Designer, working on large scenes or asset libraries, or maintaining a custom Material Library for long-term production. It's compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer.
[BAM] AutoMat is best for blender artists who create many materials in Substance Designer, work on large scenes or asset libraries, or maintain a custom Material Library for long-term production.
[BAM] AutoMat is completely free to download and use.
[BAM] AutoMat is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so it runs on the current LTS release and later versions. If you're on an earlier build of Blender, update before installing. The current release is version 1.2.1. Because compatibility beyond the stated range isn't guaranteed, it's worth checking the developer's page for the latest supported versions before adding it to a production pipeline.
[BAM] AutoMat is listed here as free and can be downloaded at no cost through the developer's ArtStation and other Blender add-on resources. It's released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. The developer notes that all proceeds from certain marketplace listings go to the Blender Development Fund. For current licensing terms and download options, check the developer's page.
[BAM] AutoMat supports both OpenGL and DirectX normal maps, so material sets built with either normal convention are handled during setup. It also includes automatic handling of color spaces and channel selection for plug-in or packed textures, which covers common variations in how texture sets are exported. These options suit texture libraries produced in tools like Substance Designer, where many materials are created at once.
[BAM] AutoMat is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, an open-source license. The extension does not require special permissions in Blender when installed. For the full license text, source access, or contribution terms, refer to the developer's page, and feedback goes to the developer directly. AlexeyHRDesign maintains the add-on alongside ongoing Blender and Python work, with version 1.2.1 as the current release.
