Why we like it

Deformer is built on Blender's Geometry Nodes and ships with the presets it uses, making it a transparent option for artists who want to inspect and adapt the setups.

What is Deformer?

Deformer, from EBTRR, is a Blender add-on that reshapes a mesh through the influence radius of another object. You select a Mesh Object as the Main Object, then add a Deformer Object to it by choosing a Deformer Type and pressing Add. The Standard Type uses the vector from the deforming face to the deformed face, while the Normal Type uses the normal from the deformed face. An optional setup process adds a Subdivision Surface Modifier that you control through the interface.

You can move the Deformer Object and watch the deformation update, increase or lower the influence field with Remap, and change the amount of deformation through a Strength Multiplier or Strength Adder. The Standard Type includes a Normalize Mode using normalized vectors for the face-to-face vector. The maximum number of Deformer Objects is 20, and the Deformer Object needs to be a Mesh Object.

The add-on ships with a Blend file containing all the Geometry Nodes presets it uses, plus a reduced version of the Standard Setup that uses fewer nodes and starts its bulge effect earlier. Documentation is included, and a demo video is available.

Who is Deformer best for?

Deformer is best for blender users deforming, sculpting or carving meshes through the influence of another object.

How much does Deformer cost?

Deformer is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

What type of object can I use as a Deformer Object in Deformer?

Deformer requires the Deformer Object to be a Mesh Object, since the add-on works with vertices. Empty Objects and Text Objects will not always work correctly. If you want to use a Text Object, you can convert it by right-clicking on it and choosing Convert then Mesh to run the conversion process. Once converted, the object works like any other mesh. You select a Mesh Object as the Main Object, then add a Deformer Object to it by choosing a Deformer Type and pressing Add. The maximum number of Deformer Objects is 20.

What is the difference between Standard and Normal mode in Deformer?

Deformer offers two Deformer Types. The Standard Type uses the vector from the deforming face to the deformed face and includes a Normalize Mode that uses normalized vectors for the face-to-face vector. The Normal Type uses the normal from the deformed face. In Standard Mode the centre of the Deformer Object cannot move over the mesh of the main object. Normal Mode can show artefacts where normals deviate much from the normals of the faces you want to deform. Rounder, smoother objects work better than angular ones, and the upper faces bend down rather than up.

Why does my Torus deformation look wrong with a Subdivision Surface Modifier in Deformer?

Deformer depends partially on the smoothness of the Deformer Object, and you normally add a Subdivision Surface Modifier with Catmull-Clark to smooth it. When that modifier is the last in the stack, it executes on the graphics card, and Geometry Nodes cannot access that transformed data, so the original pre-modifier data is used. This is a general Blender Geometry Nodes limitation, not a fault of the add-on. You can fix it by disabling GPU Subdivision under Preferences, Viewport, Subdivision, or by applying the Subdivision Surface Modifier when appropriate.

Is Deformer free to use?

Deformer is listed as free in this catalog. Because licensing terms can change over time, check the developer's page for the current details before you rely on it for a project. The add-on comes with documentation, and support channels are offered through the EBTRR Discord and the Blender Market contact form, which the developer also points to for feature requests and bug reports. A demo video is available for the add-on as well.
