Why we like it

Fit Lattice earns its place in the superhive library for fitting lattices around objects at any rotation, including parts at odd angles, and for cleaning up the cage, modifiers, and vertex groups in one step.

What is Fit Lattice?

Fit Lattice is a Blender add-on from Mark Kingsnorth that wraps a lattice deformation cage around one or more meshes. It gives control over orientation, subdivision, and cleanup, and it can align and resize a lattice at any rotation to fit objects that aren't axis-aligned. As you rotate, the lattice shrinks to fit around the minimum contour.

The add-on works in edit mode, so you can run it on selected faces, edges, or vertices without leaving edit mode. You can fit a single lattice to multiple meshes at once, choose built-in subdivisions such as 2×2×2, 3×3×3, or 4×4×4 or define your own grid dimensions, and set interpolation to B-Spline, Linear, or Catmull-Rom in one go. A Mesh Deform mode fits a mesh cage instead of a lattice, using Mesh Deform modifiers.

One-click options apply the deformation and remove the lattice, modifiers, and vertex groups when you're done. The add-on has been in use for years and is continually supported.

Who is Fit Lattice best for?

Fit Lattice is best for blender artists who need to wrap lattice deformation cages around one or more meshes, including objects that aren't axis-aligned and selections made in edit mode.

How much does Fit Lattice cost?

Fit Lattice is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

Does Fit Lattice work with Blender's extensions system?

Fit Lattice is listed as Blender Extension Compatible, so it works with Blender's extensions system. The add-on has supported Blender across releases, including an upgrade for the Blender 2.8 beta that shipped alongside the 2.7 version. For the current supported Blender versions and installation details, check the developer's page. If you run into any problems, the developer invites questions, issues, and feature requests by email, through the Contact Creator button on the store page, or on X/Twitter.

Can Fit Lattice be used while modeling in edit mode?

Fit Lattice works in edit mode, so you don't need to leave it to use the add-on. Select faces, edges, or vertices and fit a lattice deformation cage to that selection while you're modeling. Edit mode support was added in version 1.2.0. Alongside this, you can also fit a single lattice to multiple meshes at once, and remove the lattice, modifiers, and vertex groups in one step when you're finished.

How do I apply the deform binding in Fit Lattice's Mesh Deform mode?

Fit Lattice added Mesh Deform mode in version 1.8.0, letting you fit a mesh cage instead of only a lattice and deform objects with Mesh Deform modifiers. To apply the deform binding, remember to click Bind at the bottom of the options screen that appears in the lower left of the viewport when running the add-on. Without binding, the Mesh Deform setup won't take effect.

What lattice subdivisions does Fit Lattice offer?

Fit Lattice includes built-in subdivision presets such as 2×2×2, 3×3×3, and 4×4×4, and you can also define your own grid dimensions. Beyond the grid, it can set the lattice interpolation to B-Spline, Linear, or Catmull-Rom in one go, and align and resize the lattice at any rotation to wrap objects that aren't axis-aligned. This gives you a range of starting cages and control over how the deformation interpolates.

Is Fit Lattice free?

Fit Lattice is listed as free here in the catalog. Licensing and pricing can change over time, so check the developer's page on superhive for the current terms before you download. The add-on comes from Mark Kingsnorth, has been in use for years, and is continually supported. For questions, issues, or feature requests, the developer can be reached by email, through the Contact Creator button, or on X/Twitter.
