Why we like it

Image Packer earns its place in the Blender Extensions library by covering four distinct packing algorithms in a single Image Editor panel, backed by a 5-star rating and tens of thousands of downloads.

What is Image Packer?

Image Packer is a Blender add-on from Quint-Vrolijk that combines multiple images into a single image. Its panel lives in the Image Editor area, where you pick from four packing algorithms and adjust how each image is scaled and arranged.

Square Packing outputs a 1x1 image and can preserve aspect ratios or stretch images to fit. Row Packing brings every image to the same height, Column Packing to the same width, and both return the median ratio of all images. Next Fit Packing keeps original sizes but may leave gaps between rows. Image size can follow the average, median, minimal or maximum side length, or a custom value.

Beyond the core layouts, you can randomize image order, add padding, change the background colour, delete unused images in the blend file, or add every image in the file to the packing list. Version 1.0.7 added a button to add files directly. The add-on is released under the GPL v3.0 or later and works with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer.

Who is Image Packer best for?

Image Packer is best for blender users who want to combine several images into one image using different packing layouts.

How much does Image Packer cost?

Image Packer is completely free to download and use.

Key features

  • Four packing modes: Square (1x1 output), Row (equal height), Column (equal width), and Next Fit (keeps original sizes, may leave gaps between rows)
  • Scale images based on average, median, minimal, maximum side length or a custom value, preserving aspect ratio or stretching
  • Add padding around each image and change the background colour
  • Randomize the order of images before packing
  • Delete unused images in the blend file, or add all images in the file to the packing list

Frequently asked questions

Does Image Packer work with Blender 4.2?

Image Packer is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so any release from 4.2 onward should run it. The add-on can be dragged and dropped into Blender or installed from disk, and it requires no special permissions to run. If you are on an older Blender build, you would need to update to at least 4.2 before using it. For current compatibility details and any newer releases, check the developer's page.

Where does the Image Packer panel appear in Blender?

Image Packer adds its panel to the Image Editor area, and that is the only place it appears. Open an Image Editor and the packing controls become available there. From that panel you choose a packing algorithm, adjust scaling, add padding, set a background colour, and manage which images go into the packing list. This keeps the packing workflow within the editor where you are already working with images.

What packing algorithms are available in Image Packer?

Image Packer offers four packing algorithms. Square Packing produces a final image with a 1x1 aspect ratio and can preserve each image's aspect ratio or stretch it. Row Packing scales all images to the same height, while Column Packing scales them to the same width; both output the median ratio of all images. Next Fit Packing keeps the original image sizes but may leave gaps between rows, also outputting the median ratio. Image size can be based on average, median, minimal, maximum side length, or a custom value.

What license is Image Packer released under?

Image Packer is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, and this catalog lists it as free. The extension does not require any special permissions to run in Blender. Source and issue tracking are hosted on the developer's GitHub page. For the current licensing terms and any usage conditions, check the developer's page directly before relying on it in a commercial project.
