Keyboard Layout Emulation earns its place in the blender_extensions library for a narrow but real problem: it lets artists on non-QWERTY keyboards keep Blender's default QWERTY shortcuts, including those added by other add-ons, all managed from the Keymap preferences.
Keyboard Layout Emulation is a Blender add-on that remaps your keyboard shortcuts to emulate QWERTY shortcuts on non-QWERTY keyboard layouts, as if Blender handled shortcuts based on scan codes rather than input characters. You can type text in your preferred layout while still benefitting from Blender's default keyboard shortcuts.
The remapping covers shortcuts from all add-ons, not just Blender's own. Layout emulation is reapplied whenever you restart Blender or install new add-ons, so add-on shortcuts stay remapped, and each remapped shortcut is tracked to avoid remapping it twice by mistake. If the defaults don't suit you, you can define your own keyboard layout using a simple editor.
You apply and manage everything from Preferences > Keymap: select your input layout in the top dropdown, click Apply, then use Revert to undo the emulation. It's compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer and released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later.
Keyboard Layout Emulation is best for blender users on non-QWERTY keyboard layouts who want to keep Blender's default QWERTY keyboard shortcuts, including those from installed add-ons.
Keyboard Layout Emulation is completely free to download and use.
Keyboard Layout Emulation is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so recent Blender releases are covered. The add-on is currently at version 1.0.4, last updated in early 2026, and released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. Because it works by remapping keyboard shortcuts within Blender's keymap, you apply it directly from the preferences rather than needing any external tools. For the exact current compatibility details, check the developer's page.
Keyboard Layout Emulation is applied from Preferences > Keymap. Select your preferred input keyboard layout in the top dropdown selector, then click the Apply button next to it, and all keyboard shortcuts are remapped. Shortcuts added by add-ons in the future are also remapped. If you want to change the layout or edit shortcuts manually, click the Revert button to undo the emulation. You can edit the add-on's preferences by clicking the gear icon on the top right.
Keyboard Layout Emulation remaps keyboard shortcuts from all add-ons, not just Blender's own shortcuts. Layout emulation is reapplied whenever you restart Blender or install new add-ons, which keeps add-on shortcuts reliably remapped over time. Each remapped shortcut is tracked to avoid remapping it twice by mistake. If the built-in layouts don't suit you, you can define your own keyboard layout using a simple editor, giving you control over how the emulation maps your keys.
Keyboard Layout Emulation is listed as free here in the catalog, and it's released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. That license also means the source is available; the project is hosted on the developer's GitHub repository, where you can review the code and report issues. For current licensing terms and any changes, check the developer's page. The add-on is a compact download and is maintained through versioned releases.
