Why we like it

Lattice Magic stands out in the Blender extensions library because both of its tools were built around production character animation, with support for linked and overridden characters and a shapekey-and-keyframe workflow for camera-based deformation.

What is Lattice Magic?

Lattice Magic is an add-on by Mets that brings two major lattice-based deformation tools, along with some minor lattice utilities, to Blender. Tweak Lattice deforms a set of mesh objects in a way similar to Proportional Editing, except the deformation is driven by an object in 3D space that can be parented to a deforming character, follow their armature deformation, and be animated. Camera Lattice deforms a collection of objects from a particular camera perspective, like Liquify but operating on vertices instead of pixels; its lattice points cannot be animated, so the add-on provides a workflow for managing a set of shapekeys and their keyframes.

Both tools were designed for character animation tweaks in a production environment and fully work with linked and overridden animated characters. Version 1.0.1 introduced an automatic parenting option, set as the default, which parents the lattice to the same bones as the deforming bones of the nearest vertex to the cursor; the manual parent-selection method remains available. This release also replaced the fall-off expression with preset fall-off shapes such as Linear, Smooth, Root and Sphere, and added poll messages so the UI explains when an operator isn't available.

Frequently asked questions

Does Lattice Magic work with Blender 4.2?

Lattice Magic is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer. You can add it by dragging and dropping the extension into Blender, or by downloading it and installing from disk. The add-on requires no special permissions and is distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. For the current release and any compatibility notes, the developer's page is the place to check.

Is Lattice Magic free to use?

Lattice Magic is listed as free in this catalog. It's distributed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, and the add-on requires no special permissions to run. You can get it through the Blender extensions listing by dragging and dropping into Blender or installing from disk. Licensing and download details can change, so the developer's page is the best place to confirm the current terms.

Does Lattice Magic work with linked and overridden characters?

Lattice Magic's two main tools, Tweak Lattice and Camera Lattice, were designed for character animation tweaks in a production environment, and they fully work with linked and overridden animated characters. Tweak Lattice deforms mesh objects using an object in 3D space that can be parented to your character, follow armature deformation, and be animated. Camera Lattice deforms objects from a particular camera perspective and includes a workflow for managing shapekeys and their keyframes.

How does automatic parenting work in Lattice Magic?

Lattice Magic added an automatic parenting option in version 1.0.1, and it's the default behaviour. It parents the lattice to the same bones as the deforming bones of the nearest vertex to the cursor, so you no longer need to figure out which bone to parent to, and the lattice follows the deforming vertex even when many bones affect it, though not deformation from shape keys or other modifiers. The manual method for selecting a parent bone remains available by switching the Parenting Method option.
