Earns its place in the blender_extensions library for pulling Grease Pencil mode and tool switching into one customizable wheel, with .json preference sharing across machines.
GP Tool Wheel is a Grease Pencil add-on for Blender that brings mode and tool selection together in one wheel. By default you invoke it with the F8 shortcut, which you can change in the add-on preferences. The wheel appears when there is an active Grease Pencil object and the cursor is in the 3D viewport. Click an icon to select a tool, tap 1 to 6 to switch mode only, or click near the colored dot in the center.
You can compose your own wheel in the preferences: set the keyboard shortcut, define the order of the modes, and choose which tools appear. Preferences can be saved to a .json file and loaded on other computers or Blender installations. Some users assign Tab as the shortcut to replace the default pie menu.
From Blender 4.3, GP Tool Wheel works with the new Brush Asset Shelf. It uses the Essential brush assets that ship with Blender by default, and you can assign a custom brush to a tool by right-clicking a brush and choosing Set as Tool in GP Tool Wheel.
GP Tool Wheel is best for grease Pencil artists in Blender who switch frequently between modes and tools and want a customizable quick-access wheel.
GP Tool Wheel is completely free to download and use.
GP Tool Wheel is listed as compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer on the extensions platform, while the developer's repository notes it suits Blender 3.0 and higher, with legacy installation for versions up to 4.1. Grease Pencil version 3, introduced in Blender 4.3, is supported. Version 1.0.11 adds a small compatibility update for Blender 5.0 after the gpencil_paint.brush.gpencil_tool property was removed. For the current version and the right installation route for your Blender release, check the developer's page on GitHub.
GP Tool Wheel opens with the F8 shortcut by default, and you can change that shortcut in the add-on preferences. The wheel appears when there is an active Grease Pencil object and the cursor is somewhere in the 3D viewport. To select a tool, click its icon. To switch mode only, tap 1 to 6 on the keyboard or click near the colored dot in the center of the wheel. Some users assign Tab instead, replacing the default pie menu.
GP Tool Wheel lets you save and load your wheel preferences to a .json file. You can then distribute that file to other computers or Blender installations, so your custom shortcut, mode order, and selected tools carry over. This is handled in the add-on preferences, where you compose the wheel. For step-by-step guidance on customizing and transferring your setup, the developer's page has further documentation.
GP Tool Wheel works with the Brush Asset Shelf introduced in Blender 4.3. By default it uses the Essential brush assets that ship with Blender, and the Brush Shelf is active in Draw and Sculpt Mode for Grease Pencil. To use a custom brush, right-click it and choose Set as Tool in GP Tool Wheel, then pick the tool in the dialog and click OK. That brush is then activated when you click the tool in the wheel.
GP Tool Wheel is listed as free in this catalog and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. The extensions platform notes that the add-on does not require special permissions. Because licensing and distribution terms can change over time, check the developer's GitHub page for the current license and download options before you install it. The source code is also available in the developer's repository.
