Why we like it

Matalogue holds rank 167 in the blender_extensions library. It requires no special permissions and is released under the GNU GPL v3.0 or later.

What is Matalogue?

Matalogue adds a list of materials and other node trees to the toolbar of Blender's Node Editor, making it easier to switch between materials while shading and between compositing setups while working across multiple scenes. Clicking a listed item switches the Node Editor to that tree and selects the related objects.

It gathers node trees from several sources: shader nodes for both materials and lights, geometry nodes modifiers and tools, node groups of various types, and compositing. The material list can be filtered to selected objects only, visible layers only, all scenes, or materials that have no users. The Lighting section lists lamp data along with World nodes, and the Compositing section lists each scene so you can jump to its compositing nodes.

When you switch to a material that no object uses, Matalogue creates a dummy object with no vertices, since selecting an object is the only way to control what material appears in the Node Editor via Python. That dummy object is removed once it is no longer needed. Freestyle nodes are not yet supported.

Who is Matalogue best for?

Matalogue is best for blender artists who work across many materials, lights and compositing setups and want to switch between node trees without hunting for them.

How much does Matalogue cost?

Matalogue is completely free to download and use.

  • Clicking a listed item switches the Node Editor to that tree and selects the related objects
  • Sources node trees from shader nodes for materials and lights, geometry nodes, node groups, and compositing
  • Material filters for selected objects only, visible layers only, all scenes, and 0-user materials
  • Lighting section lists lamp data and World nodes; Compositing section lists each scene

Frequently asked questions

Does Matalogue work with Blender 4.2?

Matalogue is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, and the current version is 1.5.1. It adds its list of materials and node trees to the toolbar of the Node Editor. If you are on an older Blender release, the developer's GitHub page lists earlier versions covering Blender 2.8 to 3.6 and Blender 2.7, so check there to match the add-on to the Blender version you run.

What node trees does Matalogue list?

Matalogue pulls node trees from several sources in Blender: shader nodes for both materials and lights, geometry nodes modifiers and tools, node groups of various types, and compositing. Materials can be filtered by selected objects only, visible layers only, all scenes, or materials with no users. The Lighting section covers lamp data and World nodes, and the Compositing section lists each scene. Freestyle nodes are not yet supported.

How do I install Matalogue in Blender?

Matalogue can be added by dragging and dropping it into Blender, or by downloading the add-on and installing it from disk. The download is a small zip, around 13.1 KB in size, and it requires no special permissions. Once installed, its list appears in the toolbar of the Node Editor, where clicking a name switches the editor to that node tree and selects the related objects.

What license does Matalogue use?

Matalogue is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later, and it is listed as free here in the catalog. For the latest licensing details, check the developer's GitHub page. The add-on requires no special permissions in Blender. Both its source code and its issue tracker are hosted on GitHub under gregzaal/Matalogue, where the version history and earlier releases are also available.
