MatColeX earns its place in the Blender extensions library for bringing material organization and shader application into the 3D Viewport, with version 1.7.8 resolving the earlier first-slot-only limitation.
MatColeX is a Blender add-on from budijozz that collects, organizes, and applies shaders from the 3D Viewport. It gives materials a dedicated interface inside the viewport, adds a folder and category system for tracking them, and handles adding, renaming, and organizing materials without opening the Shader Editor for every tweak.
The add-on was originally built to manage a large material library. It works with complex node groups by exposing only the most important parameters, keeping the interface focused during production. Version 1.7.8 applies materials to the Active Material Slot rather than being limited to the first slot, supporting complex meshes and face assignments in Edit Mode, and updates the Quick Guide shown when no folders exist.
MatColeX is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, requires no special permissions, and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. A separate pro version is offered by the developer. You can drag and drop the add-on into Blender or install it from disk.
MatColeX is best for blender users managing large material libraries who want to organize and apply shaders from the 3D Viewport.
MatColeX is completely free to download and use.
MatColeX is compatible with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer, so it runs on 4.2 and later releases. It is distributed as a Blender extension and requires no special permissions to run. The add-on works within Blender's 3D Viewport, adding a material interface there rather than sending you to the Shader Editor for basic tasks. If you are on a version older than 4.2 LTS, you will need to update Blender first. For the latest compatibility details, check the developer's page.
MatColeX can be added by dragging and dropping the add-on file into Blender, or by downloading it and installing from disk through Blender's extension preferences. The download is small, at around 9.4 KB. Once installed, it adds a material interface inside the 3D Viewport with a folder and category system for organizing shaders. It requires no special permissions to run. If you run into trouble, the developer accepts issue reports through the project's GitHub page.
MatColeX version 1.7.8 updates the Quick Guide instructions shown when no folders exist, reflecting a workflow built around Blender's native Active Slot. The release also resolves the earlier first-slot limitation: materials now apply to the Active Material Slot rather than only Slot 0, supporting complex meshes and face assignments in Edit Mode. This version was published in October 2025. For the full version history and any newer releases, check the developer's page.
MatColeX is listed as free here, and it is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. A separate pro version is offered by the developer through their store. For current licensing terms and to confirm what each version includes, check the developer's page. The add-on requires no special permissions and works with Blender 4.2 LTS and newer. You can install it directly into Blender via drag and drop.
