Why we like it

MotionGen earns its place in the Superhive library for handling the full chain from video to armature to retarget locally, keeping processing on your own machine. Worth checking the requirements first, since it currently runs on Windows with an NVIDIA GPU only.

What is Motiongen?

MotionGen is a Blender add-on that extracts motion from video using AI detection, taking MP4, MOV, or AVI files and producing rigged character animation without markers or sensors. Processing runs entirely on your local machine, with no cloud usage during processing and no subscription for it; an internet connection is needed only once, for initial setup and license validation, after which the developer states the license stays active permanently.

Extracted motion can be retargeted in a single click to Rigify, Unreal MetaHuman/Mannequin, or Mixamo rigs. Automatic jitter removal and keyframe reduction clean up the curves, with adjustable cutoff values and reduction percentages. InPlace mode locks animation to the origin for Unreal Engine, Unity, and other game pipelines, and you can switch between A-Pose and T-Pose for retargeting or weight painting.

The add-on currently runs on Windows with an NVIDIA GPU 2080 or higher, and supports Blender 3.6 to 5.2. It ships in Lite, Pro, Gold, and Ultimate tiers that differ in per-video length limits, commercial use rights, and seat counts.

Who is Motiongen best for?

Motiongen is best for blender artists turning video footage into rigged character animation and retargeting it onto Rigify, Unreal, or Mixamo rigs for game engine pipelines.

How much does Motiongen cost?

Motiongen is completely free to download and use.

Frequently asked questions

What Blender versions does MotionGen support?

MotionGen supports Blender versions 3.6 through 5.2. Beyond the Blender version itself, the add-on currently runs on Windows only, with Linux and macOS listed as in active development and no set timeline. It also calls for an NVIDIA GPU 2080 or higher with at least 8GB of VRAM, 8GB or more of system RAM, and around 15GB of disk space for the engine and its dependencies. On a supported setup, the installer configures those dependencies automatically the first time you run it, so there is no manual dependency work required.

Does MotionGen need an NVIDIA GPU?

MotionGen requires an NVIDIA GPU, specifically a 2080 or higher with at least 8GB of VRAM, and support for the 1080 is mentioned as a possibility later on. The add-on runs on Windows at present, while Linux and macOS are in active development with no announced timeline. Alongside the GPU it lists 8GB or more of RAM and roughly 15GB of disk space for the engine and dependencies. Processing happens locally on your machine, so the GPU handles the AI motion detection rather than a remote server.

Does MotionGen work offline?

MotionGen processes video entirely on your local machine, with no cloud usage or internet connection needed during processing and no subscription tied to it. An internet connection is required once, for the initial setup and license validation, and after that validation the developer states the product stays active permanently. Motion data is extracted locally from your MP4, MOV, or AVI files using the add-on's AI detection, so your footage does not have to leave your computer to be turned into a rigged animation.

What video formats and clip lengths does MotionGen handle?

MotionGen accepts MP4, MOV, and AVI files as input for its AI motion detection. The length of video you can process in a single pass depends on your tier, with shorter per-video limits on the lower tiers and unlimited length on the higher ones. Once the motion is extracted, you can retarget it in a single click to Rigify, Unreal MetaHuman/Mannequin, or Mixamo rigs, then clean up the result with automatic jitter removal and keyframe reduction using adjustable cutoff and reduction settings.

Is MotionGen free?

MotionGen is listed as free in this catalog, though the developer offers it across several tiers — Lite, Pro, Gold, and Ultimate — that differ in per-video length limits, commercial use rights, seat counts, and studio use. For current licensing and which tier suits your needs, check the developer's page. The developer also notes that if the product is out of reach financially you can message them to request a discount or free access, and support is available for installation help, including remote assistance.
