Earns its place in the Blender extensions library for automating a tedious part of multi-pass compositing — building and maintaining output nodes, denoising and versioned folders from a single sidebar panel.
Output Setup Helper is a compositor add-on for Blender that creates and keeps a clean output setup in sync with the enabled Render Layer passes. With one click it builds a full compositor node tree from scratch, adding a Render Layers node, File Output nodes for beauty and utility passes, and per-pass DenoiseWithMix groups for beauty passes, then configuring output paths, multilayer EXR settings and versioned render folders.
Updates are non-destructive. The Update Compositing button synchronizes the graph with the current Render Layer configuration: it adds newly enabled passes, removes outputs for disabled passes, clears unused denoise nodes and preserves valid existing connections, so it can be pressed multiple times without breaking the setup. Outputs are split into two EXR multilayers — a denoised, comp-ready beauty layer for lighting and shading passes, and a losslessly stored utility layer for data passes such as Depth, Normal, Vector, Cryptomatte and Indices.
Versioned output is derived from the .blend filename, generating an organized renders folder structure per version. The add-on is designed for lookdev, lighting and rendering workflows where passes change frequently, and lives in the Compositor sidebar under Setup Helper.
Output Setup Helper is best for lookdev, lighting and rendering artists working with Cycles multi-pass renders where Render Layer passes change frequently and the compositor output needs to stay organized across versions.
Output Setup Helper is completely free to download and use.
Output Setup Helper is compatible with Blender 5.0 and newer, and the developer notes it requires Blender 5 or later. The current release is version 5.0.1, updated in February 2026, and it appears in the Compositor sidebar under Setup Helper. Because it targets the Blender 5 compositor, earlier versions are not supported. It is also designed for Cycles, so that is the intended render engine. For the latest release details, check the developer's GitHub page before installing.
Output Setup Helper is designed for Cycles, and its denoising relies on Cycles denoising data — specifically the Normal and Albedo passes fed into a reusable DenoiseWithMix node group. Beauty passes are routed through that group, with a global Denoise level that blends between raw and denoised results, while utility passes bypass denoising entirely. Because the workflow builds around Cycles passes and its denoising data, Cycles is the intended render engine. The developer also recommends consistent file naming, such as _v001 and _v002, for the versioning to work well.
Output Setup Helper is built for repeated updates. The Update Compositing button synchronizes the compositor graph with the current Render Layer configuration: it adds newly enabled passes, removes outputs for passes that were disabled, clears unused denoise nodes and preserves all valid existing connections. The developer states you can press Update Compositing multiple times without breaking the setup. Note that the separate Create Compositing Setup button builds a fresh setup and overwrites existing compositor nodes, so the two controls behave differently.
Output Setup Helper extracts the render version from the .blend filename, such as _v003, and generates a consistent output structure with per-version folders for preview, beauty and utility renders. By default it goes one level up from the .blend file into a 'renders' folder, and this can be changed in settings. Outputs are split into two multilayer EXRs: a denoised, comp-ready beauty layer and a losslessly stored utility layer holding data passes like Depth, Normal, Vector, Cryptomatte and Indices. Each output is named automatically and placed into its versioned folder.
Output Setup Helper is listed as free here and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0 or later. Its listing shows the add-on requires no special permissions, and it is distributed as a small download that you install into Blender from disk or via drag and drop. For current licensing terms and any usage conditions, check the developer's GitHub page, where the source is available under the GPL. Licensing can change, so confirm the details there before relying on them.
